Husker Shorts By The Omaha Scene Staff If the Huskers are a cat with nine lives, they hope to have a few left. Nebraska seemed to sputter once again at times, but finally wore out a wily Purdue squad that seemed re-energized by the insertion of a new coach. That was not unexpected since NU’s offense is banged up and Tommy Armstrong Jr. was left without two of his favorite targets and most talented playmakers, namely Cethan Carter and Jordan Westerkamp. The Cornhuskers have to play four quarters this week as they enter Camp Randall Stadium to face a well-rounded Wisconsin Badgers team. The Badgers at times like Ohio State, have seemed invincible, but let’s not forget that they (and now Ohio State) both have losses. I don’t think anyone would have predicted at the beginning of the season that Nebraska would have been ranked either No. 7 overall or No. 21 in total defense. Week after week we’ve found a way to win, and in spite of the Badgers No. 9 overall defensive ranking, I think with a few breaks and at least one of our weapons hopefully returning in Westerkamp, who with good reason is Tommy’s favorite target, the Huskers have more than an average shot to come out of this one with a win. It also won’t hurt the Huskers that Wisconsin will be without starting linebacker Jack Cichy, who currently is the Badgers’ leading tackler with seven stops for a loss. receivers one-on-one. There are a few things to be proud of already. Nebraska is off to its best start since 2001. They are currently tied for 25th in turnover margin at plus-5, and are leading the nation in fourth quarter point differential. Currently that stands at +85 with Nebraska outscoring its opponents 98-13 in the final frame. One thing for certain, if we need to go to the well too many times on check-downs to lumbering tight end Sam Cotton, it will be a long day in Huskerville, or Madison. We’ll have to pull some T.A. Magic for this one, and it’s finally a chance to keep all of the naysayers quiet. Hopefully the coaches know something that we don’t. Nebraska 28, Wisconsin 24. Wisconsin leads the overall series 6-4 and has won four of the last five dating back to 2011. Two of the meetings in Madison and one in the conference championship game were among the ugliest losses in Nebraska football history. It seems to me that if Nebraska stacks the box, gets pressure on the Wisconsin’s freshman quarterback, and stuffs the run, the secondary has been doing a decent overall job covering 8 The Omaha Scene | October 26 - November 1 | Volume 2 Issue 39
