business London From the editor’s desk Lisa Bucher Managing Editor, Business London With the cold weather upon us, most of us want a warm body to cuddle. What if you’re single? Curling up on the couch with a warm blanket and a hot drink doesn’t always sound appealing. However, finding love could be just one left and two right swipes away. But there is a problem that exists across many dating apps. Fifty-three per cent of people lie on their online dating profile. Some of those lies have to do with job and income and others with age, height and weight. A significant number of people surveyed by global research agency Opinionmatters admitted to using photos of their younger, skinnier selves. All is well until that first date when the person sitting across from you looks nothing like their profile picture. There are many ways to avoid this situation such as friending the person on Facebook to see more photos or Googling their name. However, there is a straightforward approach. That would be Zepeel. This app makes it impossible to lie about appearance. Founded in 2012 and based in London, Zepeel brings people face to face. This allvideo dating app requires users to create a profile video. Matches can exchange video messages and participate in live video chats. We talked with chief marketing officer, Rob Rapiti about the product and its unique marketing strategy (p.14). Dating apps have made it possible to skip the nightclub experience, braving long lineups, drinking $15 beverages, facing rejection and stumbling home alone. What has this meant for London’s hospitality industry? Read about it on page 30. Penguin Fresh is coming to London just in time for the holiday season. Customers can shop from their smartphones, tablets or computers. It’s another evolution in the powerful forces of disruption marketing. In downtown London, coffee shopping is one of the core marketing principles of the London Bicycle Cafe. Abuse is an important topic for November with London turning purple for Shine the Light on Women Campaign in support of Woman Abuse Prevention and Awareness month. With this in mind, the timing seemed right to tackle domestic abuse and the workplace. Read the Broad Perspective on page 48. Don’t see what you want to read? Contact us or pitch us a story idea. In fact, one of the early adopters of ARKit is IKEA, with a mobile app that combines both of those uses. The Swedish furniture giant just launched IKEA Place, an augmented reality app that includes photorealistic, 3D virtual models of 2,000 items (with more to come). Hold your smartphone to take a shot of a room, select a piece of furniture, and you can then move it around within the model of the room to see what it will look like — before buying. This may not sound revolutionary, but it goes far beyond anything that’s been available to shoppers before. The advanced augmented reality technology means the virtual furniture is exact, right down to cloth textures. Shading and colours react according to the lighting in various areas of the room, and the models are automatically scaled up or down in size depending on where in the room they are placed. It’s all done with an incredible degree of accuracy and without lag. It has potential to become a game changer to how people shop, how they check out possible vacation destinations, how they buy and decorate a home, and, of course, how they play games. While Pokémon GO was the opening salvo that announced the arrival of augmented reality, it’s Apple’s move to go all-in on augmented reality that will take it mainstream, fast. Businesses that are on top of this exciting new technology will reap the benefits as consumers and industry adopt augmented reality. Those who ignore it are not only missing out on a potential growth opportunity; they risk being left behind. ~BL WORLD CLASS AUTOMATION SOLUTIONS ENGINEERING We Engineer Solutions It’s what we do For over 25 years our staffhas applied technology to modernize and improve business. ideas Fresh food is a click away Penguin Fresh set to make its mark on the London food scene. by patrick morley Penguin Fresh, owned and operated by real estate giant, smartCentres, is launching two London locations just in time for the holiday season. The online grocery service connects small, local producers with purchasers. Vice-president and head of Penguin Fresh and Penguin Pick-up, egil Moller nielsen is currently seeking local produce, dairy, bakery and meat producers in the London area. The concept is simple. Penguin Fresh sells products without carrying inventory. Farmers and distributors keep the inventory. Customers place their orders online. instead of Penguin Fresh buying then selling, it does the opposite. once orders are placed, customers select one of two London-based smartCentre kiosk pickup locations or pay a $6 home delivery fee with no minimum order. “it’s about saving time,” adds nielsen. “The concept is based on giving time back to consumers. For some people shopping in a grocery store can be stressful. we’re providing fresh, quality foods in a convenient way. it’s a win for farmers and consumers.” Penguin Fresh is hoping to capitalize on the trend toward eating locallysourced produce, along with the increased popularity of online shopping. nielsen believes consumers want to know who’s behind the food they buy and where it was harvested. “Buying local is now a worldwide phenomenon,” he explains. “it makes sense as far as freshness and giving power back to farmers and consumers.” Penguin Fresh, states nielsen, is the fresh produce spin-off of Penguin Pick-up, where customers order many of the same items they can find in a grocery store to be picked up at a convenient smartCentre location. Currently, in Canada, there are 74 Penguin Pick-up locations, with 28 of them having the Penguin Fresh option. The value proposition for a consumer with this model is high, he adds. Customers are able to control the entire shopping experience from their smartphone, tablet or computer, with access to more than 1,300 products. There are no minimum orders. As a trend, online shopping is showing no signs of slowing down. in fact, it is set to take over as the number one preferred method of shopping. online shopping, according to research done by Canada Post, is a booming business in Canada with more than 21 million Canadians making at least one online purchase per year. of that group, 9.2 million people bought something from an American online retailer. Penguin Fresh is hoping to put its stamp on the online market model. Farmers are ready to exercise more control of their distribution channels while customers reap the benefits of high-quality fresh food provided affordably and conveniently. “Farmers are the best at managing their food,” says nielsen, “and consumers are getting used to shopping online. if their experience is good, they’ll likely do it again. Farmers can be frustrated with the distribution chain. They prefer fewer middle-men at the supply level. Penguin Fresh can help solve this issue.” nielsen noted that with the Penguin Pick-up venture, almost half of consumers stay and shop at the mall where they pickup their food, adding residual value to the concept and the stakeholders at the malls. “retailers want as much traffic as possible and (mall) landlords want attractive, busy shopping centres,” says nielsen. “it’s a great model with benefits for all involved – retailers, landlords, farmers and consumers.” ~BL 10 | businesslondon.ca | november 2017
