National Responsible Gambling Counselling Line – 0800 006 008 From the Editor: AS THE AFRICAN gaming industry prepares to descend upon South Africa for the 3rd Annual Gambling Indaba - set for 17 & 18 July 2017 at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg - a number of exciting developments have taken place that will ensure that an African show grows in stature and size in the years to come. Gambling Indaba has formed a strategic alliance with Clarion Gaming, organisers or the world-renowned ICE Totally to market the event going forward. “While our initial plans to have the Gambling Indaba event rotate between the three main casino operators in South Africa, have been unachievable this year due to logistical reasons, and the expo venue at Time Square not being completed in time for the 2017 event, we are sure that our alliance with Clarion will see the event reaching full-stride with the coming years,” said Percy Kwinda, CEO of Gambling Indaba. “Already, our efforts to bring world-class gaming, regulatory and compliance training to Indaba have seen success and we are hoping to bring regulatory training from University of Las Vegas directly to Africa at the next show - saving more than 50% of the costs normally incurred to visit the US for the same training. We will also be hosting training from world-renowned Totally Gaming Academy this year - the first steps in many more exciting things to come for Indaba in coming years. Delegates will also receive discounted accommodation of between 30% - 60% by booking through Indaba’s website and SAA has also partnered with us to bring discounted flights to Indaba delegates - see you there!” Visit www.gamblingindaba.com for more info. TIME SQUARE, being built at a cost of R4-billion, represents Sun International’s largest investment in a casino development in 15 years and forms part of the green Menlyn Maine precinct. “Tick tock, the time has finally arrived for Sun International to unveil its new flagship casino development to the public. A tremendous feat, the first phase of the development has been completed in two years. Every day has been a milestone in this exceptionally exciting development, with the evolution of the site, especially in the past four months, being nothing short of breathtaking. Now we introduce a new era in entertainment and hospitality in Tshwane. We are ready to blow your mind,” said Hoppé. Construction of Time Square commenced in April 2015, with development of the casino and restaurant section fast-tracked by six months to completion in exactly two years. The casino itself is currently the second largest in South Africa, with two floors housing 2 000 slots and 60 tables, as well as a Sun Lounge, Prive and several private gaming rooms. Unprecedented in South Africa, the casino boasts specialty products never seen before in the country, some of which are exclusive to Sun International. The time-themed, futuristically-designed casino features close to 1000 digital screens which will be optimized to generate evolving mind and mood experiences, making it the most technologically advanced casino in Africa. On rooftop of Time Square is Altitude, a champagne garden and supper club offering panoramic views of Menlyn and beyond. The next phase, construction of a state of the art, 8 500 seat Arena, will be complete in November this year, followed by phase three, The Maslow Time Square hotel in March 2018. The only venue of its kind in Pretoria, the arena will play host to international and local concerts, exhibitions and lifestyle events. The hotel will offer new concept in hospitality, being a 238 room specialist business hotel, offering standard to premium accommodation. The weight of the steel used in the roof structure of the casino, hotel, globe bar, arena and dummy globe equals 834 tons. • During the superstructure construction, an average of 300m 3 of concrete was cast every day, with a truckload every 12 minutes. On one particular day in July 2016, a South African record was set for the longest continuous pour of concrete - 1,550m 3 over a period of 18 hours poured from a total of 260 cement truckloads. • By the time the wet works were complete, the complex had used a total volume of 106,983m 3 of concrete, enough to cover approximately 125% of the surface of the Kimberley Big Hole to a depth of 0.5m. 169,641m 2 of internal and external plaster for the complex is enough to cover 254 tennis courts. Mozambique approves new Gaming and Gambling Law Mozambique has approved its Regulation of Gaming and Gambling Law which, in addition to increasing the number of casino licenses to be granted in the country, also reduces the distance between casinos, the country’s Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism said recently. ANA COMOANA has been quoetd as saying in Maputo after a meeting of the Council of Ministers, that the new regulation states that the country’s capital, Maputo, may have up to four casinos within a vastly reduced radius allowing closer proximity of casinos, while the Beira and Chimoio cities can have a maximum of three within that same location. The cities of Mozambique were classified under this regulation into three classes – A, B and C – and Maputo is considered class A, the city of Beira, the capital of the central province of Sofala, class B and cities of Chimoio (Manica) and Quelimane (Zambezia) class C, which sets the maximum number of licenses to be granted. The deputy minister stressed that through this regulation, the government intends to concentrate a larger number of casinos in a small area and gave Macau as an example of concentration of casinos. “This concentration allows the player to be in a casino and, at his discretion, move to another, either because he is losing or because the other has better security or other conditions,” he said. 04 I Gaming For Africa I April / May 2017
