4 WELCOME TO NAXOS – The World's Leading Classical Music Group FOREWORD BY KLAUS HEYMANN, Founder and Chairman of NAXOS Naxos – A World of Classical Music Naxos was founded in 1987 and has developed from being known primarily as a budget label focusing on standard repertoire into a virtual encyclopaedia of classical music with a catalogue of unparalleled depth and breadth . Innovative strategies for recording exciting new repertoire with exceptional talent have enabled the Naxos label to develop one of the largest and fastest-growing catalogues of unduplicated repertoire . Over 7,500 titles are currently available at affordable prices, recorded in state-of-the-art sound, both in hard format and on digital platforms . Naxos works with artists of the highest calibre and its recordings have been recognised with numerous Grammy® awards, Penguin Guide 3-star recommendations, Gramophone Editor’s Choice Awards and many other international honours . The company has also transformed into a global enterprise that owns, administers and/or distributes a large number of independent record labels . Some of these labels are listed in this catalogue . The Naxos name is synonymous not only with classical music recordings, but also with other products and services, from DVDs to books, e-books, audio books, apps and musical scores, as well as a wide range of online resources and services, for both general and professional consumption . With its suite of subscription streaming platforms, Naxos continues as a leader and innovator, particularly in the area of education . NaxosMusicLibrary .com, launched in 2002, is used by thousands of educational institutions around the world . With over 120,000 albums from hundreds of labels and more than 1000 albums being added every month, it has become the listening source of choice for generations of students as they explore classical music . Together with the Naxos Video, Jazz, World Music and Spoken Word libraries, our online resources have had a great impact in developing future audiences for these genres . The Naxos label’s 2015 musical milestones The Naxos label is famous for its many projects to record either a composer's complete oeuvre, or complete cycles of works from within that output . Projects completed in 2015 include the 6-volume series from Leif Segerstam and the Turku Philharmonic of Sibelius' compositions for the theatre and many rarely performed shorter pieces; Marc Soustrot's 3-volume edition of Saint-Saëns' symphonies, performed by the Malmö Symphony Orchestra; Villa-Lobos' complete guitar manuscripts; and the string quartets of Paul Hindemith and Spanish composer Andrés Isasi . Ongoing cycles include the Prokofiev symphonies from Marin Alsop and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP); the Villa-Lobos symphonies, also from OSESP under Isaac Karabtchevsky; Ravel's orchestral works from Leonard Slatkin and the Orchestre National de Lyon (ONL); and Vivaldi's sacred music, featuring the Aradia Ensemble under Kevin Mallon . Jordi Masó's groundbreaking survey of the piano music of Joaquín Turina now has reached 10 volumes, and our complete Liszt piano cycle has reached 41 . We began a number of new projects in 2015, including the opening instalment of Wagner's Ring cycle, which Jaap van Zweden and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra will record over four successive seasons; and the first of three volumes featuring Federico Moreno Torroba's guitar concertos . Last year we continued to add some truly outstanding releases . Among the highlights were Tianwa Yang's disc of violin concertos by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Bernstein's Symphony No . 3 'Kaddish' from Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra . Both artists earned considerable international recognition, with Tianwa winning an ECHO Instrumentalist of the Year award, and Marin being invited back to conduct the world’s largest classical music event, the

BBC's Last Night of the Proms . Other standouts included JoAnn Falletta's recording of works by Florent Schmitt with the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra, and Septura's virtuosic arrangements of Russian music for brass septet . Julian Lloyd- Webber’s conducting debut of English Music for Strings with the English Chamber Orchestra proved a huge hit among a wide audience . Exciting new talents joined the Naxos artist list last year: pianist Boris Giltburg received rave reviews for his first two discs, one of Schumann’s Carnaval and other works, with the second featuring three Beethoven sonatas; and cellist Gabriel Schwabe's recording of Brahms’ cello sonatas and song transcriptions received much attention from the press . There were also numerous world première recordings, including that of Simon Mayr's Requiem in G minor; Gordon Chin's Symphony No . 3 and Cello Concerto No . 1; Boris Pigovat’s Holocaust Requiem, orchestral works by Zhou Long, and Villa- Lobos' fourteen folksong arrangements from Guia prático . Opera lovers will appreciate the addition of the first recording of the complete original uncut version of Rossini's Guillaume Tell, Rossini's La gazza ladra, conducted by Alberto Zedda, and Philidor's Les Femmes Vengées from Ryan Brown and Opera Lafayette . Our ever expanding American Classics series has also grown with 15 new entries that include the second volume of John Knowles Paine's orchestral works, Jack Gallagher’s Second Symphony and William Bolcom’s Canciones de Lorca, as well as three Grammy nominated albums – Joan Tower’s Violin Concerto, orchestral works by Stephen Paulus, and a vocal album by Stephen Rouse . Other national series have also seen notable additions – the Canadian Classics series released works by one of Canada's foremost contemporary composers, Andrew Staniland; our Chinese Classics recording of orchestral works by the distinguished composers Zhou Long and Chen Yi also won a Grammy nomination . British music was also well covered, with several British Music Society re-releases, featuring important recordings of works by composers such as Standford, McCabe, Bridge, Moeran and Leighton . The Naxos label offers something for everyone, newcomers and collectors alike . Whether they are early music fans, guitar enthusiasts, opera buffs or connoisseurs of historical performances they will find a host of new discoveries that will both surprise and delight . News from our digital services Our educational platforms – the Naxos Music Library, the Naxos Jazz Library, the Naxos Video Library and the Naxos Spoken Word Library – all continue to grow and to provide access to an incredible wealth of music, data and other information . In 2015 more labels joined the Music Library, including the Universal Music Group labels; a new mobile app was introduced for our Spoken Word Library; and we launched a special, new service dedicated to World Music, with 50,000 tracks including the entire Smithsonian Folkways catalogue, at www .naxosmusiclibrary .com/world . ClassicsOnline HD•LL, our pioneering high-definition and lossless streaming site, continues to set the pace with its cuttingedge technology, and recently launched an upgraded version . We also launched www .NaxosWorks .com, a new site for artists and performing arts organisations where they can find all the most important information about classical musical works – instrumentation, duration, year of composition, composer biographies, music notes and much more . All this, together with the development of a range of apps and e-books, demonstrates the Naxos commitment to providing the best possible access to recorded classical music in the world .
