NAXOS NEW RELEASE GUIDE CLICK TO LISTEN NAXOS VICTOR HERBERT CELLO CONCERTOS, NOS. 1 & 2 8573517 | 747313351770 1 CD | SRP: US $12.99 CA $12.99 COMPOSER: Victor Herbert ARTIST: Mark Kosower (cello) • Ulster Orchestra • JoAnn Falletta (conductor) TRACK LIST: 01-03. Cello Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 8 04-06. Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 30 07. Irish Rhapsody for Grand Orchestra • Irish-born Victor Herbert was one of the most celebrated names in American music in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A cellist, conductor, and composer of light operas, he was also a recording artist. • His two Cello Concertos are full of gracious melodies, the D major having a songlike slow movement and a spirited Polonaise finale that earned praise at its 1885 première in Stuttgart. • The E minor Concerto, scored for a large orchestra, is more tightly constructed then the First and it was hearing this work that inspired Herbert’s superior at the National Conservatory in New York, Antonín Dvořák, to write his own great B minor Cello Concerto. • JoAnn Falletta served as the Principal Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra from 2011 to 2014, with whom she made her debut at London’s prestigious Proms and has recorded music of Gustav Holst, E.J. Moeran, and John Knowles Paine. Her Naxos recordings include the double GRAMMY® Awardwinning disc of works by John Corigliano and GRAMMY® nominated discs of works by Tyberg, Dohnanyi, Fuchs, Schubert, Respighi, Gershwin, Hailstork, and Holst. • Cellist Mark Kosower recorded Ginastera’s Concertos on 8572372. About this release Fanfare wrote: “Even in the composer’s most demanding passages, there’s no sense that the cellist is being pushed beyond his limits, and his sound remains rich and full throughout the cello’s range.” • The Ulster Orchestra was founded in 1966, the orchestra’s sixty-three full-time musicians form the region’s only professional symphony orchestra and celebrates its 50th anniversary in the 2016/17 season. NAXOS NEW RELEASE GUIDE NAXOS NAXOS MAURICE RAVEL ORCHESTRAL WORKS, VOL. 3: ORCHESTRATIONS QIGANG CHEN ENCHANTEMENTS OUBLIÉS 8573124 | 747313312474 1 CD | SRP US $12.99 CA $12.99 8570614 | 747313061471 1 CD | SRP US $12.99 CA $12.99 • Maurice Ravel’s incomparable skill in orchestration and command of orchestral colour is evident both in his own works and in his orchestrations for ballet, while new life was given to his late friend Debussy’s Sarabande et Danse at the request of publisher Jean Jobert. • Ravel’s iconic orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition makes telling use of a large orchestra, vividly depicting scenes that range from the playful to the macabre. COMPOSER: Ravel • Debussy • Schumann • Chabrier • Mussorgsky ARTIST: Orchestre National De Lyon • Leonard Slatkin (conductor) • Qigang Chen is one of the most prominent Chinese composers working today, whose music has been commissioned and performed by leading orchestras and musicians around the world. • Er Huang, commissioned by Carnegie Hall, is based on a number of melodies from Peking operas, nostalgically recollected, while the unusual structure of Enchantements oublies explores a journey into the essence of beauty. • Un temps disparu features the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese fiddle, and makes use of an ancient Chinese melody called Three Variations on the Plum Blossom. COMPOSER: Qigang Chen ARTIST: Chun-Chieh Yen (piano)• Jie-Min Yan (erhu) • Taiwan Philharmonic Orchestra • Shao- Chia Lü (conductor) NAXOS NAXOS JOÃO DE SOUSA CARVALHO L’ANGELICA JOHN IRELAND MUSIC FOR STRING ORCHESTRA 8573554-55 | 747313355471 2 CD | SRP US $25.99 CA $25.99 8571372 | 747313137275 1 CD | SRP US $12.99 CA $12.99 COMPOSER: João de Sousa Carvalho COMPOSER: John Ireland • João de Sousa Carvalho was one of the most important Portuguese composers of his generation. L’Angelica was his first opportunity to write a courtly drama after being appointed as music master to the royal princesses, and impressing these noble patrons was a top priority. • Setting a libretto by the great poet Metastasio, Carvalho brings out every ounce of dramatic intensity in his richly expressive score, the story of how the beautiful Angelica uses and misuses her seductive charms told in music so captivating that Queen Maria entrusted her composer with key royal commissions thereafter. ARTIST: Joana Seara • Sandra Medeiros (soprano) • Lidia Vinyes Curtis • Maria Luísa Tavares (mezzo-soprano) • Fernando Guimaraes (tenor) • Concerto Campestre • Pedro Castro (conductor) • John Ireland’s music is often a response to landscape and romantic sensitivities, and with its significant musical clues, broad, songlike melodies and turbulent finale, the Sonata in G minor is one of his most expressive and passionate works. • A Downland Suite is one of Ireland’s most attractive compositions, especially for its exquisite Elegy and popular Minuet made familiar through its use in radio and television. • Ireland’s evocative piano works lend themselves well to string orchestra arrangement, including the poetic Soliloquy, and In a May Morning inspired by spring on Guernsey. ARTIST: Raphael Wallfisch (cello) • Orchestra of the Swan • David Curtis (conductor) 6 NAXOS OF AMERICA | NAXOS OF CANADA | NEW RELEASE GUIDE

NAXOS NEW RELEASE GUIDE NAXOS NAXOS NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV SYMPHONIES, NOS. 1 & 3 HOFFMEISTER & BEETHOVEN DUOS FOR VIOLIN & CELLO 8573581 | 747313358175 1 CD | SRP US $12.99 CA $12.99 8573541 | 747313354177 1 CD | SRP US $12.99 CA $12.99 COMPOSER: Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov COMPOSER: Ludwig van Beethoven • Franz Anton Hoffmeister • When the 21 year old Rimsky- Korsakov’s Symphony No.1 in E minor was premièred in December 1865 it was hailed in some quarters as the first truly Russian symphony. • The leader of ‘The Five’, Balakirev, favoured the use of eastern themes in the search for a personal symphonic path for national music and Rimsky seemed to signal an alternative to the German-influenced music of Anton Rubinstein. • He completed Symphony No.3 in C major in 1874. Again it was cast in a thoroughly Russian manner, full of vivacious romanticism and revealing significant technical advances on the earlier work. ARTIST: Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra • Gerard Schwarz (conductor) • Franz Anton Hoffmeister was active in Vienna both as a composer and a publisher, becoming closely associated with Mozart and including works by Beethoven amongst his editions. • The combination of violin and cello had its appeal for the amateur market, though Hoffmeister’s Duos Op. 6 include plenty of technical challenges. Conjectured as being from Beethoven’s final years as a young man in Bonn, the three refreshing and inventive Duos for Clarinet and Bassoon are so pleasing that they have appeared in numerous arrangements ARTIST: John Mills (violin) • Bozidar Vukotic (cello) NAXOS NAXOS LEO BROUWER CONCIERTO DE BENICASSIM ROBERT SCHUMANN BEETHOVEN STUDIES, GHOST VARIATIONS & SCHUBERT VARIATIONS 8573542 | 747313354276 1 CD | SRP US $12.99 CA $12.99 8573540 | 747313354078 1 CD | SRP US $12.99 CA $12.99 COMPOSER: Leo Brouwer • Joaquin Rodrigo • Frank Martin COMPOSER: Robert Schumann • This recording brings together two undisputed 20th century masterpieces and one from the 21st, all of which share surprising stories of neglect. • With its sublime Adagio, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez has become a true phenomenon in the history of Western music, but like the original version of Frank Martin’s extraordinarily powerful Guitare it suffered disapproval from its dedicatee Andrés Segovia. Echoes of Rodrigo can be heard in the cinematic romanticism of Leo Brouwer’s Concierto de Benicàssim, described by the composer as “a panorama of my own ideas” and revived here by Miguel Trápaga a decade after its première. ARTIST: Miguel Trapaga (guitar) • Real Filharmonía De Galicia • Oliver Díaz (conductor) • Some of Robert Schumann’s rarest piano music can be heard in this disc, which ranges from his precocious Titania Overture arrangement to the Ghost Variations, the theme of which, he told his wife Clara, had been sung to him by angels. • His Beethoven Studies survive in three sources, whilst his admiration for his contemporaries Schubert and Chopin is shown by two works containing a series of variations – the Variations on a Nocturne of Chopin remained unpublished until 1992. • The 1836 Third Sonata is included in the pre-1853 revision and also included is the original version of what became his very popular Toccata, Op.7. Organic structures underpin her string quartets; there is ‘heat from within’ and radiance of texture in Incandescent, her third quartet, virtuosic interplay in No.4, Angels, and fluid connections in White Water, her fifth string quartet. Only the third composer – after Stravinsky and Copland – to be commissioned by the Dumbarton Oaks Foundation, Dumbarton Quintet pursues extremes of moods both romantically consonant and dissonant. Constance Askew in the Garden ARTIST: Andrey Kasparov • Oksana Lutsyshyn (piano) • Celebrated for books such as The Sheltering Sky, Paul Bowles was one of a very select group of artists who excelled as both composer and writer. He was a distinctive and original composer and in the first of two CDs devoted to his piano works – both solo and duo – the music is grouped cyclically, stylistically or thematically. This selection includes works inspired by Latin American themes that are amongst his most atmospheric, as well as the blues-infused Six Preludes. The challenging but outstanding Sonata for Two Pianos is one of the best-kept secrets of American piano music. Also Included are pieces written for Bowles by Leonard Bernstein and Virgil Thomson. ARTIST: Warren Lee (piano) • Erik Nordgren, whose compositions include major concertos and chamber music, wrote seventeen film scores for Ingmar Bergman and the closeness of the collaboration between composer and director can be compared with that of Prokofiev and Eisenstein and Herrmann and Hitchcock. • The finest examples of their work can be heard in this disc, and include the symphonic dimensions of Women’s Waiting, the suggestive and mysterious score for Wild Strawberries and the exceptional economy of The Face. Conductor Adriano has prepared the scores directly from manuscripts and copies of the films, where available.
