For the first time in my life, I was speechless! Gazing out onto the vastness of the Grand Canyon, I stood there totally mesmerized as I took in God's nature and beauty. No words Janice Burdon Health can describe how you feel the first time you see it. The hues and textures, crevices and plateaus along with its silence, hold you spellbound. One of the seven natural wonders of the world and there I stood not knowing what to say. Looking over at my family who had the same reaction, I secretly thanked God I took my children out of school last April to enjoy this spectacular sight. It was an adventurous, educational experience that no school could ever provide. Hiking is my passion, so when I plan a trip, I make sure that hiking is in the agenda. Arizona is such a diverse state, providing not only some of the best hikes in the world but interesting culture and landscapes as well. From Ponderosa forests to dry deserts, from mountains to canyons, Nearly 5 million people visit the Grand Canyon annually to admire it's unique beauty The call of the Canyon Arizona boasts of having 21 federally recognized Native tribes to date. You can't walk the canyons and deserts of Arizona without appreciating the history of those who walked before you. Walnut Canyon was home to the Hopi and Sinaqua people. Sinaqua is Spanish for 'without water'. With water being scarce, these nomad tribes were forced to scatter, looking for alternative places to live. Walking through the canyon cliff dwellings, you can almost hear the voices of the people who lived there centuries ago. The most mysterious Navajo canyon, Canyon de Chelly, is on the largest native reservation in the United States. Otherwise known as Canyon del Muerto (canyon of the dead) this canyon is home to the Mummy Cave, Antelope House and the White House ruins. Lookouts named 'Massacre cave' pique your curiosity of stories handed down from generation to generation about the 'Long Walk' of the Navajo. Antelope Canyon is a photographer's paradise as the sandstone walls beckon you into their domain. In the canyon walls formed from wind and water, the native guides point out well-known cultural icons and images visible to the creative eye. The sun radiantly beams through, causing admirers to gasp at the beauty of this narrow slot canyon. Can you * FEBRUARY 16, 2013 3 555102912 guess what's around the next corner? Whatever canyon you choose to explore, all have their own intriguing secrets of history. Each one is beautifully unique with visitors coming from all over the globe to explore their depths. The canyon is calling. Will you answer? THE PRESENTATION OF ' THE CALL OF THE CANYON' WILL BE GIVEN BY JAN- ICE BURDON ON FEB- RUARY 28TH AT THE ST.
