Gulf Shores, ALUpon learning of City Grill’s plans to relocate to Belles Food Shopping Center on Hwy 59, I have waited with baited breath to return to one of my favorite and most highly recommend eating establishments on all of the coast of Alabama. The Grill has had a huge following of locals and those in the know, and now their premium location behind Arby’s, twice the size of the former site, will be drawing in the masses. For those of you who have never experienced the culinary delights offered at the Grill, the easy access to the new spot allows for no excuses! Our dear friend Matt Biles has worked himself silly to get the new and improved Grill open for y’all, and his labor of love, is apparent. Still dressed out with a skyline of our largest cities, painted in relaxing warm colors, adorned with oil paintings also reminiscent of big cities, they now have a separate dining area with a huge sushi bar and draught and cocktail bar. To the delight of many, especially our fabulous bar feature writer, Kelli Paris, the same late night crowd is still haunting the Grill as it is a favorite hangout of those special people in the service industry. While the many specialty beers and cocktails may flow for some, it is our turn to imbibe in City Grill’s wonderfully chosen food selections. Already a huge fan of the Crispy Goat Cheese Salad, the hand stuffed ½ lb specialty Burgers, the Shrimp and Smoked Gouda Grits, the Seared Tuna, and more gouda grits, because, they are so gouda, we are now going to be trying some of the new sushi creations. Tim, the sushi ninja, as Kelli so aptly dubbed the chef, is rolling out some specialty rolls for us while Cara puts in our appetizer order. Yes, sushi is an appetizer, or a meal, but, alas, we must sample a little bit of all the amazing options! I enjoyed a nice glass of Moscato as we were served Pork Belly Dumplings – braised pork with cream cheese and scallions inside a wonton wrapper. These dumplings literally melted in your mouth and were served with a house ponzu sauce, Cheli kept exclaiming that she had never had wontons as delicious as these fried sensations. The Shrimp Flatbread – grilled shrimp, marinated portabello and tomato topped with goat cheese on grilled flatbread, this was the best combination on a flatbread that I had ever experienced and can’t wait to have again! Other options for starters include fried Calamari, Shrimp Cocktail, Fried Conch Fritters, and Spinach and Artichoke Dip. The list of Specialty Salads is divine as are the sandwich options and they offer a soup of the day as well. Our sushi arrived, we had chosen two of the best sellers, the Buffalo Chicken Roll – boneless chicken breast fried and tossed in buffalo sauce, with bleu cheese and carrots, topped in a creamy buffalo sauce. Very different, I can see this trend going far, especially for those opposed to raw fish. The Surf and Turf – Filet mignon, shrimp tempura, cream cheese, jalapeno and spicy mayo, was incredible as well. It just occurred to me that we did not do any raw fish this trip. We will have to make up for that mishap next go round! Seriously, the sushi is fresh, innovative, and the fad has just not faded, the demand for sushi is only intensely growing. On our last visit we enlightened you on the phenomenal preparations of the Blackened Red Fish, the Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallops, and the Shrimp and Gouda Grits. Cara highly suggested the Crab Cakes, so we gavein and tried them, lol, like Cheli and I are not huge fans already! Mostly crab, these sweet delicacies topped with a roasted tomato remoulade over brown butter mashed potatoes, served with a spicy corn salad, were definitely a great fit for us. The attention that they give to marry flavors that complement each dish is spoton with every bite. The grilled MahiMahi – with a crawfish and yuzu aioli served over smoked gouda grits with steamed green beans was, again, another superb choice. The dense mild fish was moist and lightly seasoned with the crawfish cream sauce accompanying the flavors perfectly with the smoked gouda grits that we were going to devour one way or another! They also offer a Potato Encrusted fresh catch, and a Pan Seared Chicken Breast with lemon butter, sundried tomatoes, basil beurre blanc, and smoked gouda grits, with grilled asparagus, and the choicest of steaks, a Filet Mignon. Seafood Alfredo and Mediterranean Pasta, as well as Paella are offered. We opted for the Blackened Filet Mignon Pasta, although it was tough narrowing it down to this choice. But again, we chose wisely. Tender linguine tossed with mushrooms, tomatoes, in a cream sauce and bleu cheese crumbles topped with a medium rare filet. Yum, we killed two birds with this entrée that was absolutely amazing. I killed off every bite of this masterpiece in a two time sitting at the house! Not to be one’s to skip desert often, we hammered on Decadent layered chocolate cake with rich cream cheese and chocolate frostings. Along with a cup of coffee, we were utterly sated and overly satisfied. Our friends at the City Grill have always astounded us, our pride in their new success has us asking you to stop in and check it out. You will be extremely pleased with your adventure when you do. See ya soon! Until Next Month!! ^xÄÄç
