Ok, what happened...I just blinked and summer was over, back to school sales are in full force...what happened to the good ole’ days when it seemed that summer lasted forever? Well good thing we live in paradise and it feels like summertime long after all the kids go back to school!! What a pleasant surprise we had when we were invited to come enjoy the new addition to the Florabama family ‐ Florabama Yacht Club, that opened the weekend of the infamous Mullet Toss!! We didn’t know what expect when we saw “Yacht Club” in the name, but we were so excited when we pulled up and saw that they carried on the same casual atmosphere that Florabama is known for!! What we didn’t expect was the incredible 5‐Star dishes that we would be presented with!! Make sure you check out our feature and pics of the new Florabama Yacht Club in this month’s restaurant feature!! We no doubt have found a new fav for us to hang out and dine at!! All you college sports fans are gonna have a Big treat this month as many SEC Coaches and Players visit our beautiful Alabama coast for the 2nd Annual “SEC Beachfest!!” Special events, beach concerts, meet/greets will make this a fun time for the entire family and you’ll wanna make sure to join you’re other alumni at the many special Happy Hours and Golf tournaments they have planned!! Always a coast favorite, Papa Rocco’s may say they have “Warm beer and lousy pizza,” but we all know better!! We’d put Papa’s pizza up against some of the Best Italian pizza makers in the world and the beer is Always Ice Cold!! We ran a story earlier this year about the “Ghost of Happy Harbor.” Since we ran it so early in the year, we thought that there were many who might not have heard the story yet, and with such huge crowds coming for many big events in August, we thought we’d reshare the story with some new readers. In speaking with Happy Harbor, we’ve heard that it’s been quite on the ghost front lately, but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t still hanging out!! When I started my first publication, MS Coast Observer, 14 years ago, I was so honored to become part of the family known as “The Shedheads!!” The Orrison’s have always been like a 2nd family to me!! It was through the years of watching them expand to Mobile, AL, Destin, FL, Gulfport, MS, and many other locations that gave me the courage to get out of my comfort zone and launch the Alabama Coast Observer that you are reading today. That is why I wanted to share with you their new reality show that will be airing on the Food Network on August 5th at 9pm. I think you’re gonna love this family as much as I do, and if you haven’t had some Shed BBQ, make sure you stop by the next time you’re in Mobile or over in Ocean Spring, MS!! So what are you waiting for...Get out & have some fun and enjoy everything that life and Gulf Shores / Orange Beach / Foley has to offer!! I know I’m going to, so I’ll see ya there!! Perdido Key, FLNot that we are not already in love with all that FloraBama has to offer, now they’ve built a poman’s FloraBama Yacht Club. I aptly call it poman, because you won’t find any pretention or stuffiness here! I’ve always enjoyed the fabulous music and coctails for as long as I can remember, in this down to earth atmosphere that has alwys been a purely fun, beach bar extravaganza! I don’t care what season it is, or what day of the week it is, I have always had an excellent adventure at the infamous Florabama! Across the street from the infamous bar that straddles the Florida/Alabama state line, behind their liquor store, sits another indooroutdoor structure overlooking the bay and the gorgeous beach estates along Ono Island. FloraBama Yacht Club offers fine dining in an unpretentious atmosphere with a beach and a view. Boaters and jet skiers are invited to “beach it” and dine while the rest of us are allotted plenty of parking spaces, lol. And, of course, they are serving “the world’s strongest Bushwaker” at this location as well. This quote is strictly from me, because I can’t handle more than three! Our server Eric promptly served my Bushwaker as we discussed with Chef Timothy what we wanted to cover. He immediately jumped on the Greek Shrimp Nacho avowing that he and Chef Chris Sherrill had created this amazing dish. I let him know that this was already an Alabama Coast staple for me, to which he explained that they had created this at the “other” venue and buried their recipe, too funny! Fried wonton chips loaded with a creamy spinach cheese sauce, topped with feta cheese, grilled shrimp, kalamta olives, red and green onions, banana and peppadew peppers, if you’ve never enjoyed this mountain of food, you need to, and eat all of it, I dare you! And, yep, it was the original. We also loved the Spicy Cornmeal dusted Oysters – lightly fried and served in a half shell over edamame maque choux. The Lobster Corn Dog, actually tempura, was served with a drizzle of Dijon beurre blanc, and it was simply fantastic! Our very favorite appetizer after all this insane tastiness was the Duo of Seared Tuna Sashimi. We’ve tried it probably 100 times, but this was the best seared (rare) yellowfin and white tuna ever! The beautifully decorated plate were actually two combinations of two different sauces, one wasabi and soy, the other chirachi and spicy aioli. We loved them both!!. They are also offering Chipolte Hummus with grilled pita bread, Firecracker Calamari, instead of shrimp, fried and tossed in a spicy aioli, Peel and Eat Gulf Shrimp, (you can still have Royal Reds across the street), Smoked Tuna Dip, and Fried Gulf Coast Blue Crab Claws. There are four salads to choose from including a grilled romaine that can be topped with your choice of shrimp, chicken, seared tuna, steak, lobster, or fresh catch. Those are some great options for those of you who are dieting, but looking for a great meal. The only thing on the menu that they brought over was the Build Your Own Bama Burger – a gourmet seasoned hand patty topped with your choice of swiss, cheddar, blue cheese, grilled onion, sautéed mushrooms, bacon, and jalapenos on a soft sour dough bun. We had it alltheway and dressed with red onion, pickle, lettuce and tomato. This is a dynamite burger, and, as such, should have been carried over, as it is their #1 seller. We also enjoyed a delicious Caribbean Jerked Chicken Flatbread with charred red onions, pepper jack cheese, and peppadew relish. All specialty sandwiches are served with handcut, skinon, crispy fries. Other sandwiches include the Flounder Rueben, a Seared Tuna Wrap, Build Your Own Ole’ River PoBoy with shrimp, oyster, fish, chicken, or Cajun French Quarter Roast Beef. They also have baskets of shrimp, oysters, fish or chicken, grilled, blackened or fried served with cole slaw and hushpuppies. The Yacht Club offers You Hook’em We’ll Cook’em and The Fresh Sheet. A selection of gourmet dishes introduced daily, we were astounded by the quality and expertise of all dishes, but, these next two were incredible! Spicy Grilled Grouper, cooked moist and seasoned, over GumboParmesan dirty rice, served with grilled yellow squash and zucchini. Cheli always opted for another fish until she had this wonderful Grouper. We also had some Grilled Shrimp Kabobs over Canecuh Sausage Grits, served with a shoepeg corn and field pea succatash. Us southern girls do love our seafood, almost as much as we love our GRITS!!! Having my third Bushwaker I opted out of dessert. There’s nothing greater than this chocolate laced alcohol concoction in a blender. Songwriters haven, maybe FloraBama should have a new song about those Bushwakers! You don’t always have to go to the big ole’ bar across the street to have a good time, if you enjoy fantastic cuisine in a casual atmosphere, come to the FloraBama Yacht Club and “do it with us on the line!” “Fine dining in flipflops”, no better combination I say, oops, Chef Paul Kerr said that, ha! Chef Paul was recruited from Tuscaloosa where he created food fantasies at a fine hotel and catered to “The” football team. The Yacht Clubs’ team is amazing, enthusiastic, creative, and gettenerdone in a style new to FloraBama, with the same old spirit! Come on over and dine, before you party, after you party, or when you just want to indulge in a fine meal with a beautiful view. FloraBama Yacht Club has live outdoor entertainment Thursday – Sunday, serving all your favorite food and beverages. Come on over y’all, ya hear?! Florabama Yacht Club 17350 Perdido Key Drive, Perdido Key, FL on Ole River across from FloraBama Lounge. www.florabama.com

Ocean Springs, MS— One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I remember that old saying every time I go by The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint. Their eclectic style is evident as you pass any of the locations. The buildings appear to be a haphazard fitting of scrap metal and wood. The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint’s interior is no different. Here lately, cameras were seen shooting video all around The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint for a new series on Food Network. The “sneak peek” of the show “The Shed” airs on Food Network Sunday, August 4th at 9pm CST and the Season Premiere is on Monday, August 5th at 9pm CST. For those unfamiliar with the local folklore, Brad Orrison started collecting junk when he attended school at Ole Miss. When he decided to move home, he used the pieces to build a homemade junk hauler to get all his treasures to the Coast. One day he had an epiphany to open a barbeque joint. His sister, Brooke Orrison Lewis, helped him start nailing together all his junk and soon the entire family was on board. Now, the “First Family of Mississippi Barbeque” is a legend and includes Craig Orrison aka DaddyO, who manages The Saucery and Linda Orrison aka Mama Shed, the marketing director. And yes, locals really do call them DaddyO and Mama Shed! Their story is a colorful one of perseverance, fun, and goodnatured competition. After talking to them for only a short time, you’ll immediately gain a sense that working together is what’s most important to the First Family. They always joke and poke fun at one another and are quick to laugh. Is there a better recipe for television than an eclectic venue ran by a close family of barbeque geniuses?! It wasn’t an overnight success story. As Brooke points out, they’ve been in the barbeque business for 12 years. They were featured on the Food Network shows “Diners, Driveins, & Dives” in 2008 and “Best in Smoke” in 2011. According to The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint website, www.theshedbbq.com, it was also during this time that their winnings and prizes for their food and sauces really started heating up. As heads started to turn, a production company approached The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint and things began shaping up for the new TV show. “[Food Network and The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint are] one big family producing a very positive and fun show based on [our] family and barbeque,” Brooke said. Brad described “The Shed” as “a headon collision between Dukes of Hazard, I Love Lucy, Seinfeld, and with a little garnish of Cheers on top.” According to the episode guide available at Food Network’s website, viewers around the country will get to experience the oneofakind antics that are found only at The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint. In the episode “Do You Take This Hog…” The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint races to prepare a wedding feast on short notice. Cameras follow the lovable First Family around in “Something’s Fishy” as Brooke caters a fishing boat and Brad sets up concessions at the beach! You’ll also get to see some of the daily operational woes and tasks throughout the season and get behindthescenes insight and laughs. Brad said, “Cameras just add excitement. Really adding a cool buzz” around The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint. The show will feature employees such as Hobson, the Senior Pit Master; Gus and Mr. Jim, The Shed Pimps; Coal Miner, “an expert spoon player;” Big Hoss, who handles the chicken side of the competition team; Hazel, the office manager; Scotty, the Kitchen Manager; and others. Mama Shed told me the series really gets to show “a real look of what we do.” She said the show is “about The Shed, our outreaches and the family. And that of an extended family of ShedHeds!” For those unaware, customers are affectionately known as ShedHeds. A distinct, proud, and loyal group of ShedHeds have contributed over the years to the outrageous and offthewall décor.
