Friday, August 28, 2015 ■ THE SUDBURY STAR READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS 3 The Sudbury Star’s 12th anniversary Readers’ Choice Awards Sudbury’s favourites JENNY LAMOTHE For The Sudbury Star Knowing the best place for everything in your town is the kind of quality that makes a good friend and a great host. Whether you know the best place to get a beer, the best place to buy a new bathroom or even the best service to help clean it, having “insider” knowledge of your town can reveal to others that you are in the know, you have your finger on the pulse, or, you have seen the 12th edition of The Sudbury Star Readers’ Choice Awards. Though there are some names that are awarded again and again, the favourites that stay on this list stay because of their consistently good product or service. You’ll see familiar past winners, like Auto Depot and Bianco’s — both winners in multiple categories — as well as Barrydowne Paint, Harris Movers, Lougheed’s Flowers and Remax. Molly Maid has once again taken a top spot, Toppers as well, and the fries and fast food at Deluxe have taken top honours again this year. There are others who are runnerup for their awards, but have won several times in the past: Boyuk Towing, Jiffy Lube, El Mercado and Durham Natural Foods have a place in the hearts of Sudburians. For more details on our past winners, head to page 18. New voting system There are significant mainstays on this list, but some new faces will appear because of the new format of the awards system. Not only are there great new categories included, but a new voting system, which made sure that every voice was heard and every vote was counted. “Typically, this contest was an in-paper ballot that offered our readers the chance to win a $250 gift certificate for voting for their favorite businesses. The ballot listed the categories and sub 2015 categories and the reader would just write in their favourite business and after it was all said and done, we’d announce the winners,” says Melanie Junge, advertising manager for The Sudbury Star. “This year, we introduced an online ballot, plus a nomination round. It’s a huge process and we had to make sure we found an effective tool to manage it. I’m happy to say that it worked wonderfully and the audience engagement was beyond my expectations.” Unlimited nominations in any category of the awards were accepted during a three week period. Only the top five nominees were selected to be put onto the official ballot and Sudburians then had three weeks to vote on their favourite. “As you will see in this publication, some of the results are surprising, but I can tell you some of these businesses were so very happy to be nominated in the first place that their sincere gratitude to the voters is evident,” says Junge. New categories While the new voting system was used to make the process easier, new categories were added to cover new and the ever-expanding types This year’s Readers’ Choice winner is Chantal O’Neill. She has won $1,000 in New Sudbury Shopping Centre gift certificates. Presenting O’Neill with the certificates is New Sudbury Shopping Centre marketing director, Brenda Folz, left, and Sudbury Star multimedia account manager, Tim Thomson. of businesses opening in Greater Sudbury. Additionally, many subcategories were added to make choices more specific — like the addition of Best Beer on Tap, awarded to The Laughing Buddha, or the Best Beer Selection award, going this year to Hardrock 42 Gastropub. Many of the new categories get specific with restaurants, allowing you to pick the best choice for your taste buds. Winning Best Breakfast this year, is Gloria’s Restaurant, who also won in this category in 2011. As for Best Brunch, no one could match Gloria’s again — they even landed runner-up for Best Food Service Employer — though the The Doghouse Sports Bar & Eatery brunch was a pretty close second. For buffet style, head to the Societa Caruso Club. Runner-up is Sizzle Mongolian Grill, making their first, but certainly not last, appearance on this list. The new Best Employer prize is given in different sub-categories, and this year, P&M’s Kouzzina wins for Best Boss in Food Service. And that’s not all. They also take home prizes for Best Licensed Patio, Best Fine Dining and runner-up for Best Italian Restaurant. As for Best Employer in the Education Industry, the honour goes to Cambrian College, once again proving itself to be a jewel in the education crown of Greater ,Sudbury not just for students, but for all those that make the school what it is. Rainbow District School Board took second place for their role in keeping their employees happy and appreciated. If you’re looking to update your home, there are many award winners to choose form. Try End of the Roll, as winner of Best Flooring. If your bathroom needs a renovation, Best Bathroom Supplier goes to Plumbing Warehouse, for their selection and customer service. If you are making preparations for the cold winter, which is certainly coming, Campeau Heating won for Best Gas Fireplace or Wood Stove Store, as well as Best Heating and Air Conditioning. And if you are looking to get cleaned up after a gorgeous summer of ignoring the house cleaning, Molly Maid of Sudbury should be your call. They won Best Maid Service again this year (for more information about past winners, see page 18). The Sudbury Star Readers’ Choice Awards are an exciting opportunity for all Sudburians to come out in support of their favourite businesses. “For the most part, many of the businesses nominated are locallyowned and operated and this gives a sense of community and pride for everyone involved. “Even for corporations that operate in our city, the people working and running the day to day operations are residents here and love it here,” says Junge. And while there are new nominees and perennial favourites on the Readers’ Choice list, they all have one thing in common, says Junge, “Those businesses clearly take pride and offer incredible service, so much so that their customers took the time out of their day to register and vote for them and they do it year after year.”

AD{TS4116684} 4 READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS THE SUDBURY STAR ■ Friday, August 28, 2015 Family business has been serving great food and hospitality for more than 60 years At Gloria’s Restaurant, we pride ourselves in bringing a tradition of quality and comfort. Sudburians have been enjoying Gloria’s hospitality and great food for more than 60 years. Our breakfast has been voted the city’s best and our dinner entrees are delicious. Since that day in 1957, when Arnel Michel and his wife decided to buy a restaurant from Gloria Richard, people across the city have been enjoying quality food and friendly service every day at the corner of Regent and Bouchard streets. Arnel built the business steadily over the years and, in 1970, working with three other partners, tore down the original building and founded the Regency Mall. Arnel went on to other big projects, including founding the Moonglo subdivision, but Gloria’s stayed in the family. Arnel’s sons — Mario, who took over in 1989, and Bruno, who has been running things since 1996 — have made the restaurant into what it is today. Bruno has a diploma in culinary arts and earned his Red Seal designation by passing a rigorous provincial exam. His commitment to food service and to his customers led him, in 2001, to begin paying for the formal training of his cooks. Since then, eight of his cooks have graduated and their expertise is evident in every meal we serve. Every night, Gloria’s has dishes available that are not on the menu and can make some eye-popping dishes you wouldn’t expect from a family restaurant. Many of our desserts are made on site — and are a sight to behold. Everyone who works for Gloria’s is trained in safe food handling procedures by the Greater Sudbury and District Health Unit. It’s a commitment to excellence that sets us apart. We’ve spent extensively on renovations of the last few years, changing our atmosphere and modernizing our look. And Greater Sudbury has taken notice. Our breakfast has been voted Sudbury’s best. We’re a locally-owned family business that has thrived, thanks to our well-trained, enthusiastic staff and loyal customers, many of whom are more like family. Brenda, who likely will greet you when you come in with a friendly smile and big hello, has been with us for 29 years. She and our staff know many of our customers by name. We hope to learn yours, soon. Local is extremely important to all of us at Gloria’s. We could not have grown without the regular support of the locals. We regularly pay that local support forward by getting involved in a wide spectrum of community programs, partnerships and fundraising promotions. Our family is proud to serve your family in an atmosphere designed to fortify relationships. You will not be distracted by televisions and loud music here. Enjoy the unique experience with meals cooked from scratch while enjoying the friendly Gloria’s community. 2015 Chrissy 2015 Best Breakfast Best Brunch Best Food Server ••••• Gloria’s Restaurant

Since their first roast in 2004, establishing their first clientele at Greater Sudbury’s Farmers’ Market, their first location in 2007 (Minto Street), a second location in 2009 (Durham Street) and 90 varieties of coffee later, they still measure success one bean and one cup at a time. Old Rock was co-founded by Carole and Luc Roy. Carole is the master roaster and she is simply the coffee nazi; the bean stops there. Luc is the backroom business and marketing guy that you seldom see. Each barista receives weeks of training. Once trained, they become sommeliers de cafe. We have watched the evolution of quadraphonic sound, the Beta versus VHS battles, the CD and DVD player, plus the changes from regular “Fuzzy” TV to stunning HD flat-panel displays. And the more than 38 years now — with your support — Bianco’s has grown to be Greater Sudbury’s favourite car stereo, home audio and TV store year after year. One of the fundamental elements of Bianco’s success today is our award-winning reputation for great customer service. Our team is the best in the industry and their dedicated service and fantastic knowledge of the technology industry is one of the primary reasons our customers keep coming back. We have now expanded our offerings at Bianco’s to include appliances and Sealy Posturepedic mattresses. Again — it’s all about technology. For example, in appliances, you will find induction heating, win cooling and VRT anti-vibration. In mattress construction, you now have the choice of twin coils, smart latex, memory foam and progel. Which appliance or mattresses will best fit your needs? That’s where our team of professional sales associates come in. They have the ability and training to address all the questions about which is the best appliance or mattress to fit your lifestyle and budget. And, because of Bianco’s guaranteed pricing, we will match, or better, all locally advertised prices on products we represent. 2015 Best Car Stereo Best Home Audio and TV Store ••••• Bianco’s Supercentre Thank you for voting us your favourite Spa!
