Friday, August 26, 2016 ■ THE SUDBURY STAR READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS 3 The Sudbury Star’s 13th anniversary Readers’ Choice Awards Sudbury’s favourites JENNY LAMOTHE For The Sudbury Star The Sudbury Star’s Readers’ Choice Awards began in 2003, and while that makes this year lucky No. 13, it in no way means the winners are lucky to be a part of it. Every vote, every endorsement by a customer or client is earned, and that’s what makes The Sudbury Star’s Readers’ Choice Award so important to the businesses of Greater Sudbury. In the beginning, the contest was an in-paper ballot, which offered readers the chance to win a $250 gift certificate by voting for their favourite businesses. There were categories, a few sub-categories, and when all ballots were received, the staff at The Sudbury Star would count each ballot and proclaim the winners. In 2016, there are new categories, new winners, and new ways to vote. Turn to pages 18 and 19 for businesses named Readers’ Choice for the first time, as well new categories created to keep up with the new and evolving businesses in Greater Sudbury. This year, The Sudbury Star’s Readers’ Choice Awards added Best Tutoring Company and Best Optician — a chance for you to recognize the best in the biz. Last year was the introduction of the online ballot and nomination round. It was such a success it continued, giving voters an easy and accessible way to make their favourites known. The awards process is an enormous undertaking, with three weeks of unlimited nominations accepted for every category, and then narrowed to the top five nominees to be voted on by readers. The digital voting system has been a hit. “The digital voting system is very popular with our digital readers,” says Melanie Junge, The Sudbury Star group manager, media sales. “It’s easy for a voter to share on their social media pages, and allow the nominee to see the huge engagement among their fans.” Kelsi Ashley, manager of Molly Maid Bruno Michel, owner of Gloria’s Restaurant To increase social media sharing, The Sudbury Star also began considering hashtag votes this year. Not only could fans vote for their favourites online — but also they could make their vote count for more. The hashtag #SudStarFAVES was used for general tagging, and, new this year, was the hashtag #SudStarFAVES16. It was used by voters to try and give their favourites the edge — and it worked. “Each share and tag used gave the nominee an extra five votes,” says Junge. “It helped a few nominees take the lead and win.” Even with all the new happenings around The Sudbury Star’s Readers’ Choice Awards, there are many names that have stayed exactly where they are, in their rightful place as best of Greater Sudbury. Auto Depot has not just won continually in the past, but in several categories, as well. Offering a wide selection of pre-owned vehicles, this family-run business has once again earned its top spot in six categories, including Best Auto Dealership for each category: Domestic, Import and Used Vehicles, as well as Best Auto Detailing/Cleaning, Best Retail Employer, in addition to being home to first and second place for Best Auto Sales Person. Molly Maid has been named Best Maid Service for all 13 Readers’ Choice years. With an amazing range of services — using efficient cleaning methods, offering environmentally-friendly cleaning products and helpful customer service, this organization deserves its win every year. Gloria’s Restaurant is also a consistent winner, with their presence on this list again this year. Winning an award, such as Best Breakfast, means you don’t just have delicious food, but great coffee and friendly smiles offered on an early — or late — morning. If brunch is more to your taste, Gloria’s took top spot in that category, too. It also received an honourable mention for its northern staple, poutine. And speaking of northern staples, Deluxe remains on the list for Best Fries. For more than 50 years, Deluxe has meant family, fun and good food, and it too is a Readers’ Choice favourite every year the awards have been given. Akfit once again runs away from the competition. Known as “The authority on fitness,” Akfit has been in business for more than 27 years, This year’s Readers’ Choice winner will receive $1,000 worth of certificates towards detailing from Auto Depot. Pictured is Auto Depot manager, Sean Scott. The winner will be announced in The Sudbury Star. and with the results of the Readers’ Choice Awards, you can tell it’ll be a fixture for many more years. Akfit won again this year, for the seventh time, in the Best Fitness Equipment Store category. Campeau Heating has once again been chosen as Best Gas Fireplace or Wood Stove Store, as well as Best Heating and Air Conditioning Service. Campeau has been a part of Greater Sudbury for 68 years, becoming a favourite on this list and in the hearts of the community, for its continued dedication to offering quality product, service and installation. If you are looking for a delicious meal, one presented with excellent service from contented and valued employees, then P&M’s Kuzzina is the place for you. Not only did they win in the Best Employer — Food Service Industry, but its food has once again appeared on many lists, including top spot for Best Fine Dining Restaurant, runner-up in the Best Italian Food category, and honourable mention in both the Best Greek Restaurant and Best Steakhouse. You can certainly find a meal you’ll love in a place so close to the heart of Sudburians. And one more Best Employer winner — Cambrian College. Winning once again in the Best Education Industry Employer category. Cambrian College is a school that both staff and students are thrilled to be involved with. Notably, the school was recently given the Colleges and Institutes of Canada’s Silver Award for Indigenous Education Excellence, continuing the schools commitment to offering a highquality and accessible education. The Sudbury Star’s Readers’ Choice Awards may be given out based on votes from customers, but they are truly earned by the winners in each category. They see that one cannot inspire loyalty without character, and cannot win the heart of a community with anything but the best. 2016

AD{TS4771945} 4 ReadeRs’ ChoiCe awaRds THE SUDBURY STAR n Friday, August 26, 2016 Customers introduced to new culinary experiences every week Gloria’s Restaurant has been a fixture in the Greater Sudbury community since 1952, and with its eight Readers’ Choice wins, it’ll surely be around a great deal longer. When Bruno Michel took over from his parents in 1996, he wanted to make a few changes, but not many. “The most important aspect of the restaurant I wanted to preserve was the friendliness of a family restaurant,” he says. “The look of the restaurant, and the staff, strive to make everybody feel welcomed; whether you are young, elderly, professional or labourer. “Some customers have shared with my dining room manager, Brenda, that Gloria’s has found a place in their hearts, because it is where they had their first date, and now they have been married for many years,” says Michel. It is this commitment to service — and great food — that has Gloria’s Restaurant on the Readers’ Choice list again this year. They are perennial winners, and for 2016, they have taken Best Breakfast, Best Brunch, as well as an honourable mention for Best Poutine. Gloria’s also came in second in the Best Employer-Food Services category, and it’s more than likely a result of Michel’s recognition of his employee’s skills. “Like in all businesses, employees are one of the most important assets. In the hospitality industry, employees are where success is built. It is where real connections are made with regular customers. Quality service and quality food are the building blocks of Gloria’s success for the past 64 years,” Michel says. Not only does Michel aid any employee who wishes to go to culinary school, he recognizes the talents of those who already work for him — even if that begins with the delicious smells emanating from an employee’s lunch bag. “Chef Utpal has been working for me for three years and he would often come to work with his homemade lunch,” says Michel. “When he warmed his food, the lunch room was filled with a very aromatic smell. I asked if he would consider making some of his dishes for the customers once a week, on Thursdays.” Chef Utpal Ghosh agreed, and the result is the Thursday offerings of irresistible Indian food. After a challenge from another employee, Ghosh and Michel created vegan features, now served on Wednesdays. Ghosh is delighted to be living in Greater Sudbury, having recently bought a house for his family. So far, he loves the opportunity to offer new foods to different palates. “We have had many great responses. Customers like the Chicken Banjara, Butter Chicken and Palak Paneer, just to name a few,” he says. “Customers 2015 tell us they enjoy the distinct flavour and delicacy of the dishes.” Whether you head into Gloria’s Restaurant for its award-winning breakfast and brunch, or to try vegan or Indian food, you can enjoy a wonderful culinary experience knowing how happy everyone is to be eating, and working there. “Gloria’s is a great place to work,” says Ghosh, “and I enjoy the team work and organization in the kitchen. I’m given much freedom and I feel my input is valuable and appreciated.” 2016 Best Breakfast Best Brunch ••••• Gloria’s Restaurant

We are originally from a rural area of Greater Sudbury. Life in the Great White North is the envy of many southerners. Winter’s chill is no comparison to people’s warmth. When we returned from California, we found ourselves missing our favourite coffees. Not being able to find even the right beans, we sought the growers directly, where today, many ship their “greens” (green coffee beans) directly to us. Of course, we carefully roast the greens with a watchful eye. We are your personal “sommelier de café.” A sommelier de café is a trained and knowledgeable coffee professional, which specializes in matching your taste buds with the right coffee for your event, guests, meals, gift recipient or — just for you. A quality taste unlike anything you had is our raison d’être, taking you on a journey that will give new meaning to enjoying coffee.
