8 / ORA JUNE 2011 LETTERS &STUFF MY 1997 FORD EXPEDITION, IT'S A LABOR OF LOVE... I had read a few articles in Feb. 2011 issue of Off-Road Adventures and I like the "Letters & Stuff" section. I like it particularly because it gives a chance for readers like me to see what other guys are up to with their rides. I thought I would drop you a line and hopefully you could pick my ride in one of your issues. This truck is my everything, my Baby Doll. In the winter I am washing off the salt before the snow even melts. I believe that your ride is a part of your individual personality. Must be clean and mean, always. I have had a lot of medical issues lately to where I almost lost my drivers license due to a spine and nerve condition from a bad surgery a few years back. I had steel plates and screws put in my lower back and after the first year it all went downhill from there. I have been on so many medications, I would swear it would have killed a buffalo, but I fought through that. My wife wanted me to give up my license to drive because I was headed for a wheelchair, if it wasn't for a certain Dr. that I owe my life to. I am still fighting this nerve condition, but I am hopeful that I will be off all the medications this year. I have a morphine pump implanted in my body also keeping the pain from reaching my brain. It's hooked directly into my spine at the point of surgery. And through all of this I have been able to dress up this beautifu l ride I acquired new 14 years ago. Just over the last two years I have put the truck on the map in the local neighborhoods. I'm turning heads everywhere I go. After having the upholstery redone with new leather, windows re-tinted over the factory tint, a Pioneer system w/new Blaupunkt speakers. I had a 3" body lift installed, then a 3" suspension lift done. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get any aftermarket parts for this particular year and make. I have Dick Cepek 17" rims with Pro Comp 35" tires. Once the tires are worn down, I'm planning on going with 38" Super Swampers. I had a really sharp steel hood with cowl induction that I had ordered from LMC Trucks. The inside I had the cluster changed to white background and blue when the lights come on, radio to LONG ARM SWAY BARS SWAY BARS FOR LIFTED TRUCKS AIR FOR LIFTED VEHICLES ADJUSTABLE END-LINKS ENHANCE YOUR HANDLING PERFORMANCE ON THE STREET WITHOUT SACRIFICING OFF ROAD SUSPENSION TRAVEL Email your questions, comments and images (in jpeg format at 2-5 mb). with your name, address & phone number to info@oramagazine.com 8 match with blue lights. Lights also along the headliner in blue, just a few (not too much). I have a double gauge pod set with a vacuum gauge and an LED gauge that tells you your quarter mile times, as well as 60-0 stopping time, hp at the wheels, and all kinds of neat functions. A steel cover on the rear differential from ARB. She has a K&N set up with a billet spacer for the updated throttle body. A nice billet grill and also went with a full set of dual Flowmasters with 3 ft of chrome from the mufflers back, and she growls like a kitten. New set of Pro Comp shocks and I am under the hood every chance I get, at least once a week as long as my legs allow me to do so. The frame is painted with a few good few coats of flat black and looks super since you can see the whole thing. I ripped off the stock plastic running boards with the lights in them and installed a nice set of nerfs. The 4.6L isn't as sluggish as everyone thinks, she runs very well. This goes to show what a little sweat and determination can do for you, even with a bum back such as mine. You can't have it all in one day, sometimes not even in one year. But don't sweat it, your day will come if you take your time and stay focused. Thank you for letting me send this letter along with a few pictures showing what every guy can do out there if they just stay on the project and stay focused, but don't let them turn off your utilities because of it. Thank you again, Mr. Gary F. Leon Croydon, PA P.S. I just rebuilt a 1974 Corvette at the very same time, (myself). I just sold it 6 weeks ago, I couldn't get in and out of it. Gary - Thanks for sharing your passion about your 'Labor of Love' with us. You are also inspiring in your fight to recover from your very debilitating medical condition and need for such strong medications - both can be very hard to fight. It's great that you have your 'Baby-Doll' to help you focus on a goal that helps you stay strong. BTW - (and this will get me in trouble) Real men don't drive Corvettes... unless they're 4x4 Corvettes. Anybody have a Corvette they've converted to an off-road vehicle out there? If so, send us an image and tell us about it. p
