danielle fontus Founder & Publisher From Me toYou: letter from the publisher Still BASKING IN THE AFTERGLOW OF AN EXCITING AND historic election process, we all have unforgettable memories from the intense last several months. With countless images of President Barack Obama on every printable surface, who could get tired of seeing the face of our new leader?that award-winning smile the picture of courage, determination and, of course, a constant reminder of change? Of the numerous images, we couldn?t ignore those that capture the glances that President Obama and First Lady Michelle lovingly share. In the presence of millions, the two look at each other with eyes full of respect and filled with passion and undoubtedly unconditional love. But can we all share the love exhibited by our first family? Yes, we can! No relationship is perfect but we have a great example in the head of our great nation. With images, signs and songs of love splashed all over in the weeks preceding and following Valentine?s Day (exciting for some, burdensome to others), it seems to have sneaked its way onto the pages of this issue. Even as love fills the air, not too far hovers the cloud of dysfunctional relationships that is a reality for far too many women. After hearing her incredible story of surviving numerous abusive relationships, we knew that Sil Lai Abrams would offer a great contribution to this issue on love and relationships. From survivor to relationship expert and empowerment specialist, Ms. Abrams offers her wisdom and shares a glimpse of her story that she recounts in her book No More Drama (page 18). Whether it be military obligation, separate college or career moves that pull your significant other across the map, a dose of The Fly Guy may cure your longdistance relationship. Relationship expert, The Fly Guy, reminds you that it may be rough, but it is doable (page 10). Valentine?s Day, first (or fifty-first) date, date with the girls or date with yourself, make your way to one of our recommended date spots (page 14). With all that said, we just want you ladies to be happy. Single or with the man of your dreams, love yourself. You know how the song goes, ?It?s the greatest love of all.? watch out A woman of confidence, style and grace, Michelle Obama is a Harvard Law grad, Associate Dean at University of Chicago and Community A fairs Vice President at University of Chicago Hospitals and now our First Lady. WORLD! by Jennifer Fontus ISN?T SHE LOVELY? Isn?t she wonderful? WOW! What a woman, a Phenomenal Woman! Our first ever African- American First Lady is the embodiment of what this issue is all about. Her journey from the hallowed halls of Princeton to the sandstone walls of the White House is nothing short of remarkable. During the historic campaignof her husband, current President Barack Obama, Mrs. Obama comported herself with confidence, style and grace. With these same characteristic qualities, she has seamlessly and effortlessly assumed her new position while firmly holding to her family values as she dutifully embraces her role as wife and also as mother to First Daughters, Malia and Sasha. A credit to her race and gender, she is the epitome of a representative icon for both February?s Black History Month and Women?s History Month which we celebrate in March. Her place firmly documented in history, Michelle is secure in the knowledge that her accomplishments are in no way diminished by her ceding the spotlight to herprominent husband. The Harvard Law grad, Associate Dean at University of Chicago and Community Affairs Vice President at University of Chicago Hospitals, is confident that her strengthhas beenevident in the way she balanced her professional and private responsibilities. 8/Her Journey {Spring 09} www.herjourneymag.com

WOWoman: First Lady Michelle Obama Now a political wife and visible role model, it will surprise no one that in this, too, she will excel. As if more accolades are necessary, First Lady Michelle Obama joined her husband, the President, on January 29, 2009 to sign into law the ?Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act? which guarantees equal pay for equal work, a move that would greatly benefit women. And just that simply, she is writing her destiny and perhaps many of ours. With a solid past behind her and a bright future ahead, all that?s left to do now is to wish the phenomenal Michelle Obama Godspeed and a happy and lovefilled Valentine?s Day. AT LAST. HJ Who is a WOWoman? A WOWoman makes you say ?WOW? with the way she carries herself and how she strives to accomplish her goals. She takes the unconventional route and makes her own rules for success. She actively and passionately works towards making a big impact on the world. She is open minded and receptive to endless possibilities. Watch Out World because she, the WOWoman, is doing her thing!
