Lakeshore General Hospital raises $35, 000 at annual Nearly 200 people enjoyed an evening of retro fun, prizes and high fashion at the Lakeshore General Hospital (LGHJ Foundation's 7th annual fashion show called "Psychedel- Stuart Nulman Grapevine ica", which took place on September 29 at Volkswagen des Sources in DDO. The guests enjoyed delicious hors d'oeuvres, placed bids on a wide array of gifts and goodies at the silent auction, bought reams of raffle tickets, and popped balloons for prizes. Afterwards, everyone congregated to the dealership's showroom to watch the fashion show. Hosted by "Cousin Vinny" from 92.5 The Beat, the show's models displayed the latest in formal wear, casual wear, lingerie and underwear representing 11 designer labels (American Apparel, Joseph Ribkoff, Dylan Ribkoff, GUESS Kids, Blush Lingerie, Profile Wellness, Sports Experts, G-Star, Krinoline, Signor Terry, Kazamias Furs Bros., and Love,Montreal). As well, two other 92.5 The Beat personalities - Shaun McMahon and Paul Hayes - strolled down the catwalk as special guest models. After the models did fashion show their final bit of strutting and posing, it was proudly announced that the event raised an incredible $35,000. The money will go towards upgrading the LGH's Pathology Department, which will help expedite the diagnosis process,as well as the testing and treatment of 45,000 cancer patients that the hospital cares for on an annual basis. Wellness never looked so stylish. Check out the photo spread by Dick Nieuwendyk on the adjacent page for a pictorial look at the highlights of the LGH Foundation's fashion show. * * * The 8th edition of the Montreal International Black Film Festival ended in a strong, compelling note last Sunday night (September 30) with the closing night screening of the documentary "The Central Park Five" at the Imperial Theatre. Directed by Ken Burns, Sara Burns and David McMahon, the film recalls one of the most heinous crimes in the history of NewYork City, when a young investment banker known as "the Central Park Jogger" was brutally beaten within an inch of her life and raped while jogging in Central Park in the spring of 1989.As a result, five Black and Hispanic teenagers were wrongfully accused and convicted of the crime. A serial rapist/murderer eventually confessed to committing the crime, but only after the five young men spent between five and 15 years in prison. "The Central Park Five" tells the story of a New York that was emerging from a nearruinous economic crisis, but poverty was growing in Harlem, the Bronx and the Bed-Stuy area of Brooklyn, and worst of all, racial tensions were rising and getting worse, especially between Blacks and the NYPD. Also, it focuses on how the police and the legal system were bound by "institutional protectionism" in the investigation, and how many of the half-truths that were fed by the authorities were whipped up by the media into an uncontrollable frenzy that didn't give the five any chance of a fair trial or a sense of justice. But best of all,the film gives the chance for the Central Park Five to tell their respective stories and what really happened from that fateful day in April 1989 until they were finally released from jail and beyond. In fact, two of the five -Yousef Salaam and Raymond Santana - were present for the screening at the Imperial and received an enthusiastic standing ovation afterwards (along with Ms. Burns, who was also present). "My life has become easier as a result of the film. It's still a struggle, but I have to move forward," said Santana. "We weren't monsters; we were good people." Salaam was impressed with the warm, supportive reaction from the Montreal audience. "To be welcomed like this is so therapeutic. It's much needed and very necessary," he said."The system didn't work for us, and we haven't received any justice yet. This is the life we have been given and we need to keep pressing on." "The Central Park Five" is an important, must-see documentary that certainly defines what "miscarriage of justice" is all about. * * * With one specialized film festival over, another specialized film festival is coming to Montreal this month that pays tribute to a genre of filmmaking that has been around just as long as motion pictures have been in existence. continued on page 12 27 Quick and Easy Fix Ups to Sell Your Montreal Home Fast and for Top Dollar MONTREAL - Because your home may well be your largest asset, selling it is probably one of the most important decisions you will make in your life. Grapevine continued continued from page 11 The fourth edition of the Montreal Stop Motion Festival, which runs from October 19-21 at Concordia's J.A.de Seve Theatre (1453 Mackay Street), will feature screenings, lectures, workshops and demonstrations that will showcase the art and technology of stop motion filmmaking. "The Stop Motion Festival began in 2009, when I was teaching a stop motion animation class at Concordia. The students were really enthusiastic about the technique, and I wanted to encourage them to see other stop motion films from around the world," said festival director Erik H. Goulet, during an interview with the Grapevine last month at Montreal Comiccon, where he had a booth to promote the festival. "My wife suggested to me that I start a film festival. So with myself and three of my friends, we did a poster, created a website and had someone help with the logistics. The festival took off within two months." Some of the highlights of this year's Montreal Stop Motion Festival include an evening with Mark Shapiro from Laika, who will talk about the making of their popular stop motion feature "ParaNorman" (October 19); a special presentation with Merlin Crossingham, creative director of the Wallace and Gromit films (October 20); free film screenings for the entire family (October 20 and 21); hands-on sessions with the people who developed Stop Motion Pro software (October 20 and 21); and screenings of more than 70 stop motion films from 20 countries. "The stop motion film industry is not a huge one. It's always been on a roller coaster ride. Sometimes it can be very popular, and then it would disappear for a while," said Goulet. "However, thanks to Tim Burton's 'Nightmare Before Christmas', it made film students believe that making feature films using stop motion photography could be viable. And that's when the ball started rolling." Tickets for the festival sessions and/or screenings are $10 each (adults), $5 (children 12 years and under) and $50 for a VIP Pass. The Wealthy Barber author speaks in Pointe Claire David Chilton Promotes new book David Chilton, the author of the 1989 best-seller, The Wealthy Barber, spoke at the Holiday Inn in Pointe Claire on October 3 together with Jo Allan, Director of Marketing, IHG John Symon Special Canada. About 200 turned out to hear the Canadian author who is widely considered a guru of personal financial management. And dozens of fans lined up to have Chilton sign Photo: ©John Symon Chilton autographs copies of his new book copies of his newest book, The Wealthy Barber Returns after the speech. "My writing style is completely different between the two books," Chilton toldTheTimes. "My first book was written more in a novel style, but my newer book incorporates psychology and more humour. There are also new financial instruments available now. And I made a few mistakes in my first book that have now been corrected. We're always changing and improving." We also asked him about his new role on the panel of the CBC TV show,The Dragon's Den,where aspiring entrepreneurs seek financing from a panel of experts."I'm not trying to play any role there and I'm not trying to be different from the other panelists," Chilton responded. "The shows are not scripted and I'm just trying to be myself." Chilton began appearing on the popular show in September, 2012. "I liked the talk today," Arthur Galucci of Ahuntsic told The Times. "Chilton is a humble, yet entertaining speaker and cer- tainly does not need PowerPoint to back up his presentation! He also presents the information in a manner that ordinary people can relate." Galucci continued that he is also a fan of Chilton on The Dragon's Den, adding that Chilton is a good replacement for former panelist Robert Herjavec. Chilton is listed by Wikipedia as Canada's best-selling author of all time. Despite this claim to fame, Chilton was overheard joking that one of his children has never read his first book. The Wealthy Barber Returns retails for a suggested $19.95 and is available in fine bookstores everywhere. Comment on this article at: www.westendtimes.ca * OCTOBER 6, 2012 15

Joss Stone It isn't uncommon these days for an artist to find fame through television talent shows. It is unusual, however, to reach such a feat at the tender age of thirteen, which is exactly what Joss Stone did when she auditioned for and won the BBC's "Star For A Night" show in 2001.Since launching her professional career in 2003, Stone has recorded six Kieron Yates Special albums and sold a remarkable thirteen million records, making her the fifth richest UK musician under the age of thirty. At just twenty-five, the white cliffs of Dover native has dazzled audiences with her powerful voice, emitting such deep vocals and renditions of classic soul songs. As a young girl, she fell in love with the music of Aretha Franklin and taught herself her trade whilst emulating her favorite singer. Often barefoot, because as she puts it, "They (shoes) throw me off, I can't sing when I wear shoes". She goes on to say, "I'm just a wuss, it's not like anything spiritual. I just don't want to fall over." Things like this are what give her the reputation she has for being a free-spirit. For four months last year, despite being worth an estimated seventeen million Canadian dollars, spent four months living in an old Volkswagon Westfalia van, that she drove from England to Spain with a group of travellers before the vehicle sputtered and rolled to its finally rusting place in a Spanish forest - where it still resides. Stone is currently touring North America in support of her latest album, "The Soul Sessions Volume Two", which is a cover album on par with her debut album from when she was just fifteen years old.Stone commented:"I really had fun revisiting The Soul Sessions idea and I'm really pleased with the results. I've committed long term to my label Stone'd Records, but it felt right to team up with Steve and S-Curve again for this release. I think there are some great songs on the album and I loved performing them with such brilliant musicians - so I hope people enjoy it." Success can sometimes have its down sides,as the young star discovered when two men were arrested outside her home during the summer of 2011, allegedly planning to kidnap and murder her. They were caught in the possession of swords, a map of the home, rope and a body bag. Yet, Stone's persona remained unwavering as she immediately shrugged the act off in a statement made to the press just days later. In the release, she simply said "I'd like to thank everyone for their concern but I'm absolutely fine and getting on with life as normal while the police continue with their inquiries" and later added "They didn't manage it so it's all good." Of the two accused men, Kevin Liverpool has pled not guilty while his co-accused,Junior Bradshaw, has under-gone a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial. That trial began in August of this year. Joss Stone performs here in Montreal on October 10th, in the very intimate Metropolis. Movie Review by Sergio Martinez "WON'T BACK DOWN": Interesting topic, controversial thesis Education and in particular what is being done (or not done) in schools is a topic that movies have been touching for ages: some have done it with a classic quality that still resonates like Jean Vigo's "Zero for Conduct" Sergio Martinez Special (1933), or if we just want to mention more contemporary films, Michael Hoffman's"The Emperor's Club" (2002), Laurent Cantet's "The Class" (2008) and our own "Monsieur Lazhar" (2011) directed by Philippe Falardeau. In the case of "Won't Back Down" however there are some elements that make it worth discussing, even though from a strictly cinematic point of view this production leaves much to be desired. To begin with, this film directed by Daniel Barnz is"inspired by real events" which means that it is basically a work of fiction that has taken its cue from various attempts to reform schools in the United States in view of the lack of quality that seems to permeate public education. Jamie Fitzpatrick (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a single mother whose daughter attends Adams Elementary School in Pittsburgh. Malia (Emily Alyn Lind) suffers from dyslexia and this learning disability is not and cannot be adequately dealt with by her teacher nor by the school itself. In general, it seems that the teachers seem content with just going on with their routine, content with having their job security. Here is where things take off as a story, with Jamie becoming an activist for change. The change Jamie has in mind "Won't Back Down": a controversial thesis on public education problems Jamie and her daughter at the centre of activism is usually described in a derogatory form by the teachers' unions as a takeover of the school by parents and teachers, or even a kind of privatization of the public schools. At first, only one Nona, the teacher who would support change, with her son teacher, Nona Alberts (Viola Davis) would support Jamie's activism together with just a few parents, since most of them are also depicted as indifferent in regard to their children's education. Nona has her own problems with her son and the relationship with her former husband. I guess to make things more appealing to some people the director also inserted a romance involving Jamie and one teacher which is basically a superfluous distraction from the main plot. The thesis that the movie tries to convey however is highly controversial: in the end if you are going to believe what "Won't Back Down" wants to tell us, it would be the teachers, their alleged indifference regarding the students, the comfort they find in their contracts and union protection, the cause of the bad shape of American public education. The movie doesn't approach the question of public education from a wider angle: it doesn't consider for instance the social conditions of poverty in which many of the students' families live, nor the lack of resources of an educational system afflicted by brutal cuts everywhere. "Won't Back Down" is a rather superficial film that doesn't address the core issues at play in the public education system. However it could be of interest to anyone willing to engage in a more serious discussion on the problems affecting education, especially public schools,a debate that would also be pertinent in our province, although the situation here is probably not as bad as in the U.S. Playing at:Cineplex Forum, Cavendish, Colisée Kirkland, Colussus Laval, Des Sources 10, LaSalle, Méga-Plex Marché Central 18, Méga- Plex Sphèretech 14, Méga- PlexTaschereau Comment on this article at: www.westendtimes.ca 18 OCTOBER 6, 2012 *

Photo: Nicolas Carpentier. As part of the Fire Prevention Month (September 17th to October 14th) Sun Youth is able to count on the presence of Prevention Agents from the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) on hand to provide Sun Youth's beneficiaries with fire prevention safety tips.Additionally, it is possible for people visiting their booth to obtain 9V batteries to replace the one from their smoke detector. Finally, throughout the Fire Prevention Month, visitors will be entered in a weekly draw for the chance to win a free smoke detector with lithium battery (which has a 10-year lifespan). Sun Youth has been working with the SIM for many years and is called on to assist crisis victims anywhere on the Island of Montreal when a residential building is affected. The organization goes on the scene of a fire once every 36 hours on average and offers material assistance to fire victims (food, clothing, medicines, etc..) in addition to follow up with these people so they can return to a normal life as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, because of economic reasons, many people have no insurance against fire. When you set your clocks back this November 4th, remember to replace the battery in the smoke detector to ensure its efficiency. Chef Peter Webster - Bouquet Garni Turkey Soup It's Thanksgiving time again. We have all chowed down on a wonderful turkey dinner and hopefully have a lot of leftover meat for those great turkey sandwiches. I can taste them already - sliced turkey, cranberry sauce, mayonnaise, salt and pepper, lettuce on a crust baguette. What is leftover is the carcass. This is the base to a wonderful soup. First however, boil down the bones, minus all the bits of meat, with an onion, carrot and celery stalk, in a big pot of water to extract all the flavor. You now have a wonderful turkey stock for your soup. Ingredients (10 servings) * Splash of canola oil * 1 onion, diced * 2 cloves of garlic, peeled, smashed and chopped * 2 medium carrots. peeled, halved lengthwise and chopped * 2 stalks of celery, diced * 2 potatoes, peeled and diced (leftover mashed potatoes work too) * 8 cups of turkey stock * 3 - 4 cups leftover turkey meat, chopped * Salt and pepper to taste Sauté the onion and carrot in the canola oil until softened and fragrant, Add the garlic and celery and potatoes. When heated, add the turkey stock and bring to a simmer . Add in the turkey meat and salt and pepper. To enhance the flavor, you can add some dried herbs or dried sage. Let simmer at least half an hour and serve with crusty bread. Eight former students of Furlong's have signed affidavits alleging that he caused them physical and mental abuse during this time. Furlong also lived elsewhere in BC before his 1974 "immigration." None of this history is included either in John Furlong's official Olympic CV or in a book that he wrote, Patriot Hearts.According to the"official version," Furlong arrived in Canada from Ireland in the fall of 1974. There is no mention of him arriving in 1969, as an Oblate Frontier Apostle missionary or his marrying Margaret Cook, another Frontier Apostle teacher, in 1970. Furlong's two children were born in Canada, not Ireland. The allegations against him are very serious, but this affair also raises profound questions about the proce- Today, the Foundation of Greater Montréal released the 6th edition of its annual report entitled: Greater Montréal's Vital Signs 2012. This report presents an overall picture, with supporting statistics, of what is going well - and not so well - in Greater Montréal in regard to the economy, employment, the gap between rich and poor, education, health, housing, safety, as well as the environment. Overall, the Montréal region lags behind other Canadian cities in terms of economic and social dure for background checks of candidates for important positions. Rusty Goepel chaired Vanoc's hiring committee when Furlong was brought on board, but admits not remembering if he saw Furlong's CV.Nor apparently, was there any serious effort to corroborate the essential facts presented in his CV. John Symon Symon says... Furlong addressed the media on September 27."As you are aware, I have been accused of physical abuse and-apparently within the last hour-sexual abuse. I want you to know I categorically deny absolutely any wrongdoing and I believe that the RCMP looking into this matter will discredit the development. "Contrary to what some say, Montréal is doing fine, but could do so much better, " says Marina Boulos, President-CEO of the Foundation of Greater Montréal (FGM). "Our report proves it." More and more disadvantaged people The most shocking data in Vital Signs 2012 include: an overall increase for food bank assistance of 32%, and of 65% on behalf of families, regardless of their employment income; nearly half of the 70,000 students in the Montréal School Board need complaint entirely because it did not happen." He did acknowledge spending "a brief and uneventful time" in Burns Lake, BC before coming to Canada as a landed immigrant in 1974. This "brief and uneventful time" presumably includes the period when he first came to Canada, married, and saw the birth of his two children! Furlong obviously has friends in high places; BC Premier Christy Clark was quick to come to his defence, saying: "I have never found [Furlong] to be anything but a man of absolutely the highest integrity and ethics." The list of the 20 board members at VANOC includes a star-studded cast from corporate Canada. There are also a few notable figures from the sports field and two Native representatives. It has already been suggested that it often matters more who you know than what you know in job competitions. We will likely soon see if Furlong is treated like anybody else would be before our justice system. Comment on this article at: www.westendtimes.ca Montréal lags behind other cities food assistance, but only 18% receive help due to lack of resources; the number of homeless, estimated to be 30,000 today, has doubled since 1996. On the positive side, the FGM noted a decrease in the number of bankruptcies, an increase in average family income, a younger population than other large Canadian cities, and of course, Montréal's excellent cultural reputation on an international scale.
