Study Real Estate @ WITS UNIVERSITY Real estate spans land and buildings and about half the world's wealth is locked in real estate - land, oces, shopping centres (like Maponya Mall or Jabulani), hotels, whole neighbourhoods like Soweto, warehouses, golf courses, farms, stadia etc. Your home, your shopping centre, your school, your sports stadium, the nearest government oce and hospital are real estate. ABOUT BEING A REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONAL Real estate professionals advise how to invest in these assets. They value these and advise how much to buy or sell them for. Some of them work in banks (like FNB, NEDBANK and ABSA, for example) where they have to decide who gets to borrow to buy their own home or develop an oce, shopping centre, hotel, etc. The best known real estate professional is the broker who arranges sales and rentals of dierent types of homes. REAL ESTATE @ WITS Wits University has just performed an extreme and total makeover of its real estate programme. The 'made over' program increases the number, depth and quality of real estate courses in the curriculum, enabling you to acquire rst-class training in real estate. We are the only University in the country that enables you, in addition to real estate training, acquire skills in managing your own business so if you are adventurous enough, you can work for yourself instead of waiting for someone to hire you. For your application to be successful, you will need to score high grades on all your subjects at Grade 11 as your Grade 11 marks are critical in your application. If you're considering which University degree programme to apply to, don't forget to look at the Wits programme. We plan to be your gateway to a global career in real estate, which means from Johannesburg, you may end up in Accra - Ghana, Brisbane - Australia or Sao Paolo in Brazil. Need to know more? Reach for the Stars Every artist started somewhere: "The Boss", Bruce Springsteen was inspired to take up music after seeing Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show. He got his first guitar at the age of 13 and eventually became the lead guitarist and vocalist of the band The Castiles. Tom Petty met Elvis Presley when he was 10 years old and instantly became a fan of the rock and roll genre. The Beatles also made an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and the seed, for Tom Petty to be in a band, was planted. The French band Phoenix first started out as garage based band. Founded in a pub in Dublin late one December night, Thin Lizzy took form after two musicians realised they had the same ambition: making music for a living. From the original wave of British punk music, The Clash was formed in 1976. The group came together as active members in different parts of London's music scene. What do all of these artists have in common? Yes, they all wanted to be professional musicians and yes, they were all inspired by other musicians. But most importantly, they all started somewhere: once unknown, struggling groups or individuals, jumping from one band to the next, trying to find their groove. Blue blood A band making waves, with their groove already intact is alternative pop-rock group aKING. Formed in 2007 when Laudo Liebenberg and Hennie van Halen started writing an album in their spare time. "I played in a band with Merwe Marchand le Roux and he wanted to call it 'King', but that was already taken so we made it aKING - a play on royalty and pain," lead vocalist Laudo says. Drawing inspiration from individuals such as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty and bands like Phoenix, Thin Lizzy and The Clash, this dynamic combo is well on its way to being the next inspiration for unknown, struggling, garage bands. From strength to strength With their first album, Hunter Kennedy and Jaco Venter from Andrew 6 SACF Vol. 7 No. 3 By Melindi Coetzee Jaco aKING *polisiekar joined artistic forces with the guys from aKING and came up with the runaway success Dutch Courage released in February 2008. At the end of that same year the band showcased their versatility with the release of the downloadable album, In the Twilight; recording three songs in collaboration with Ghetto Vibrations, Khayelitsha United Mambaso and the Thokozani Brothers. "Sometimes I wake up at night with a line or two, but we mostly throw the ball around between us. No song has ever been written entirely the same in our camp. I'm not sure why, but it keeps things interesting," Laudo says smiling. Against all Odds, their second album and The Red Blooded Years, the third, were both produced by multiple award- winning producer Theo Crous. In their third album, there is a clear progression of their song-writing abilities. The Red Blooded Years offers fans the exciting journey of a young band's coming of age ending with a phenomenal instrumental track - a first for the band. "The title refers to our experience of growing up. I suppose it's the themes of youth which chronicles our coming of age, as a band and as individuals," Jaco says proudly. Andrew Davenport joined the band in 2010 and his distinctive guitar and vocal influences add another level to the band's maturity. Laudo Hennie © Adriaan Louw © Louis Minnaar

Environmental issues have been newsworthy for years and eco awareness has become trendy, but research conducted just a few years ago showed that consumers associated green goods with low-quality, overpriced, geeky and ugly products. Luckily this isn't the case anymore! Today there are loads of affordable, innovative and goodlooking green gadgets out there. Here are a few we think are pretty cool. 5 1. Reducing your carbon footprint one song at a time T revor Baylis, the wind-up radio inventor, took wind-up to new heights with the Spin Eco Media player. This gadget plays MP3s, movies and radio, and plays for 55 hours when fully charged. It has a USB socket if you want to charge it with your PC, or wind it up for one minute for 45 minutes of playing time. The Cardboard Radio by SUCK UK also deserves a mention. The case is made out of recycled cardboard and the device doubles as a radio and portable speaker for iPods and other media players. If you want to go eco with your tunes, there are many water-powered and solar-powered devices too. 2. Energy saving accessories for your computer or iPad The batteries in my wireless products seem to know when I have a deadline and like to choose that moment to die on me. I don't always remember to buy extra batteries, and two in the morning is a horrible time to become literally powerless. Logitech's energy-saving accessories solve this problem. Their wireless solar keyboard absorbs energy whenever there's light, outdoors or indoors, and it tells you if you're low on power. The charge lasts up to three months, even if you're working in total darkness (which would be weird, but we're not here to judge). You can add the Marathon Mouse which lasts up to three years on one set of batteries. Logitech recently released a solar keyboard folio for the iPad. If you use your iPad for about two hours a day the charge lasts up to two years, even in the dark (again, not judging). 3. Sunlight in a jar If you're looking for solar-powered lights, there are a lot of options ranging from decorative to practical, but sun jars are 8 SACF Vol. 7 No. 3 cool gadgets By Jeanne du Plessis © Bedol for going green especially cute. There are several on the market today and you can even make your own one, but the first Sun Jar was designed by Tobias Wong for SUCK UK. It was voted "Gift of the Year" in the UK a few years ago. Just leave it in the sun during the day, and at night it'll glow as bright as a candle for about five hours. For a blue glow, get the Moon Jar. 4. Changing with the time(s) Water clocks and sundials have been around forever. Thousands of years ago people were already using them to tell the time, but modern eco-friendly timepieces have definitely changed for the better! Companies like Bedol are producing accurate, aesthetically pleasing and eco-friendly alarm clocks that don't need electricity or batteries. Just fill the clock with tap water and a little salt, and voila! 5. Stay connected with solar-powered chargers Thanks to portable solar-powered chargers, you can charge your gadgets anywhere. Powertraveller's award-winning Powermonkey Extreme can charge your cellphone, GPS, portable games console, iPod, e-reader or iPad several times without running out of power. It's particularly awesome if you're outdoorsy. You can attach it to your beach chair, tent or rucksack with the Velcro strap, and if you drop it or get it wet, no problem - this shock-resistant, waterproof gadget is tougher than Chuck Norris. Powertraveller's products are designed to military specifications and have been everywhere from Antarctica to the Sahara, so it'll definitely handle your camping trip or hike. If you want to make sure it's fully charged before you set off, you can also plug it into a power socket or USB port. n © Ventus Technology@work © SUCK UK © Logitec
