This growing initiative serves as a fitting tribute in honor or in memory of a loved one, a zechus for a Refuah Sheleima, or to commemorate a special occasion or birthday. Not only will the Torah learning of our talmidim serve as a zechus for you and your loved ones, but your support will help us continue to educate future generations of Klal Yisroel. For more information, or to dedicate a day of learning, please contact Rabbi Yanky Lefkovitz at 410-484-6600 x317 or email your request to ynk@talmudicalacademy.org. AGUDAH SCRIP Agudah Scrip can be ordered online. For more information, please contact Mr. Ben-Zion Schmell at bschmell07@gmail.com Dvar Chizuk Parshas Lech Lecha As we begin these next series of Parshios we learn about the lives of our Avos and Imahos. Chazal say that “Maaseh Avos Siman l’banim”, which literally means that actions and events in the lives of our Avos are a sign to their children. An example would be that many Gedolim would study the parsha of Yaakov meeting Eisav in order to learn how to deal with other nations. However it is much deeper than that. Rabbi Chaim Volozhiner ztz”l asks a question. In Avos 5:3 it says there were 10 generations from Noach until Avraham. Whereas, in the next mishna it says that Avraham Avinu had 10 tests. Why is Avraham only called “Avinu” in regard to his tests? Rav Chaim explains that for each test that Avraham passed he was literally “Avinu”, he put in to our Jewish genetic coding the ability to withstand the same adversity. He talks about people in his time of the late 1700’s, picking themselves up and going to Eretz Yisroel. This was a time of severe hardship. He explains that they were able to do it with the koach of this Parsha of Lech Lecha. So too, our children, have all of those kochos from Avraham’s tests inside of them. In a world where we can sometimes feel even common decency is under attack, we need to help our children draw on their heritage. They can be a true Ben Torah with mentchlichkite, regardless of the society around them, just as Avraham “Avinu” did. LOWER SCHOOL NEWS 1ST GRADE HASCHALAS CHUMASH בס”ד On Sunday, our first graders celebrated their Hashchalas Chumash! Family members, rebbeim, and teachers gathered to shep nachas. The boys began learning from the chumash for the first time! Each student also had a chance to read from a real Sefer Torah. Each first grader will also receive a chumash of his very own engraved with his name! We were honored that Rabbi Barkin, Rabbi Goldfeiz, Rabbi Lowenbraun, Rabbi Motzen, and Rabbi Schwartz addressed the students and guests. Their words inspired excitement and passion for learning Torah. A yummy sweat kiddush awaited the boys and their families upon the completion of the Hashchalas Chumash. Each boy also received a special goody bag of treats. Thank you to Rabbi Moshe Markowitz for taking beautiful pictures of the event. We cannot wait to share them with you. Of course we owe tremendous hakaras hatov to our first grade rebbeim for being mechanech our students in every way. They were truly just as excited as their students to reach this milestone. We also owe a big thank you to the first grade teachers and morahs for their dedication to educating and caring for our students. May our first graders continue to give their families and yeshiva lots and lots of nachas! ז’‏ מרחשון תשע”ח 2 פרשת לך לך

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT: RABBI MILLER’S 4TH GRADE The deep roar of the black bear, the fast strike of the hungry mountain lion, and the razor sharp teeth of the alligators all must be watched carefully by the park rangers overseeing each state. Our 4th graders had the pleasure and privilege of having their main story about protecting national parks come alive with a fascinating presentation from Ranger Sommer. Aside from being an official park ranger stationed in Hawaii, he is also the son of our Mrs. Sommer! MITZVAH GORERES MITZVAH בס”ד After recording brief interviews with some of the 4th grade students, there is no question Ranger Sommer’s knowledge was greatly appreciated. Moshe Zalman Freedman particularly enjoyed listening to Ranger Sommer explain how different Baltimore used to be when there was more forestland for the animals to live on. Betzalel Schwartz also enjoyed seeing the different kinds of animals, especially different sea turtles along the sandy beach! Moreover, Yoni Lencz and Daniel Attar were both amazed to hear how bison powerfully plow their head into the snow, using their massive horns to clear the ground to find food in the winter! Jake Lazerow agreed and added, “I enjoyed learning new insights about how to help animals survive, and to create as much distance as possible when seeing a dangerous creature.” On behalf of all of the entire 4th grade, thank you very much to Ranger Sommer for taking the time out of your busy schedule to teach us such incredible information about taking care of the plants and animals throughout the national parks of the entire country! The Talmidim in Rabbi Slansky’s and Rabbi Zelinger’s 4th grade classes used their leftover Esrogim from Sukkos to design beautiful Esrogim-Besamim creations. By doing this fun activity, they were able to learn about the idea that once you do a mitzvah with an object you should try to perform another mitzvah with the same object. The Talmidim in Rabbi Slansky’s class really did a fantastic job doing chazara on Perek Bais of Shemos with Chavrusas. Their great effort paid off with magnificent grades on their recent Chumash Test! Parshas Lech Lecha October 27, 2017 3

MESIVTA NEWS בס”ד Prior to their Succos break, the TA senior class had a campaign designed to raise funds to help subsidize future senior class projects that will be coming up throughout the year. They dedicated a good portion of their time off to build Succahs for members of the community. Ably led by Azriel Primak, the bochurim worked many hours in order to have a successful event. A beautiful letter of appreciation was submitted by a Baltimore ‘senior’, to the Where What When magazine. Stay tuned for more fundraisers involving our innovative seniors!
