Matthew’s 5th – Cox Releases “The Cost of Everything and the Value of Nothing” Omaha-based Artist Delivers Album No. 5 By Andy Roberts “We just went in and kind of banged it out in one day,” he explained. “It was all just very fresh. Shooting from the hip.” The recording took 13 hours on a Saturday, during which they put down new songs, old songs, and some covers. Cox said he wanted to get something like the sound he hears while the band is playing around the house. The listener may find more of Cox’s slide guitar work featured. “We just had fun.” The recording has few overdubs and there was no use of scratch tracks for more of a live feel. It is an album rich in traditional American roots music, including tracks such as “Jumping’ River Blues,” “Little Lucy,” and “Nighttime Drifter.” He admits finding a favorite is tough, but: “’The Charcoal Grill Song’ is kind of an open letter to my Mom,” who passed away. The album is available on Itunes and CD Baby as well as local record stores. It’s a big year for Matt Cox. The Shenandoah, Iowa, native who has made a home for himself in Omaha and become an established Americana artist has been devoting himself to music fulltime. No day gig, as it were. “If you want to make your living off of it, you really have to devote yourself to it full time,” Cox explained. One result is “The Cost of Everything and the Value of Nothing,” his new album out just last month on Sower Records. Self-produced, it was recorded live the week before Christmas at Omaha’s Hidden Tracks Recording Studio. “Cost” features Colin Duckworth on pedal steel, guitars, and mandolin; Vern Fergesen on accordion and piano; and Josh Dunwoody on upright bass. “I wanted to do a different approach all together,” Cox told The Omaha Scene. So, for his first recording in two years, he deiced to record live with his band and basically with most songs unrehearsed. “It’s selling pretty well,” Cox said. The release shows helped, and the next step is to hit the road and grow his audience. “Definitely doing some traveling is the next step,” he agreed. With the big summer events tapering off, Cox plans to go to Colorado in the near future and then head south until winter arrives. There will be some local shows, but those will fill less of his itinerary for the next few months. “Devising a plan,” is how he describes the near future. Most shows on the road won’t be with a full band and many are likely to be in new markets. Cox said he will happily open for other acts. “It’s kind of just what makes sense right now,” he said. “We’ll see where it goes from there.” A major focus is to have enough work to grow his following so he can support his family and live off his music, now that he’s given up his day job. “As far as a career goal, it would be to keep it that way.” 8 The Omaha Scene | August 3 - August 9 | Volume 2 Issue 27
