A huge difference. Think about the most influential people in your life. After your parents or religious leaders, most of us point to the teachers we had growing up. Life began for me in Grade 11 when my English teacher left me a note on my report card saying that we'd better make a plan to enrol me at university. Up until then I had never thought about furthering my studies. But with the help of my teacher, I not only found my niche, but I also began to fall in love with the world of literature. Without the influence of a teacher who chose not to dwell on those long (and sometimes thankless) hours invested in grading papers and designing curriculum, but instead rested on her belief that teachers do actually mean something in the lives of their students, I would not be writing this now. I certainly would not have chosen journalism, and instead of writing, I would probably be the world's greatest waitress (I added the word "greatest" for effect only, not ego). Her passion for English, her teaching style, and her engagement with the class was so natural, so special. I am glad she chose to teach. For this, I say thank you Mrs Goetsch, with the warmest amount of gratitude and respect. Who inspired you? Make sure you take the time to thank them! n Liezl Liezl Maclean EDITOR liezl@sacareerfocus.co.za Meet the rocking SACF team... Landa Joubert - Translator * Claim to fame... I obtained my Honours degree in Psychology two years ago, almost 30 years after my first degree and raising three kids in between. * With my 1st salary I bought... a cookbook, Huisgenoot Wenresepte, because by that time I was already married and could not cook a thing! * My peeve hates are... people who start their sentences with: "Please don't take this the wrong way, but..." We all know how that usually ends. * The person I'd most like to invite to dinner... well-known South-African writer, Marita van der Vyver. I have read all of her books and enjoyed every one of them. She lives in France with her husband and kids and also released a lovely cookbook a few years ago. We will cook together and drink fabulous wine from South-Africa whilst talking about her life in France and all the stories she still wants to tell. * If I weren't a translator, I'd probably be... a psychologist.

Ask the EXPERT! Less talking about the problem and more action, action, action! Suffering from a little career 'fatigue'? That is, tossing out the 'your future' messages because it can get a little bit, well, overwhelming? Fret not. The person with all the answers is here to help you figure out your next move. Send your woes to kerry@ sacareerfocus.co.za Kerry Dawkins 4 SACF Vol. 7 No. 2 Q: My June exam results were not as good as they should have been. My parents are mad with me. They have said to me that I have to pass at the end of the year. I am feeling very anxious and I am SO scared I will fail again. Please can you assist me? A: This is a difficult situation which many of us have faced, here are some tips to manage your anxiety and get your studies done. 1 Stop procrastinating When a person gets anxious, they tend to procrastinate and make excuses for not getting their work done. The work pile gets larger and larger causing more anxiety and doubts. Stop procrastinating and start taking little steps forward. We recommend that you start by making "little wins" often and build up your confidence and momentum. Do a quick and easy task and tick it off your list. Do the next quick and easy task and tick it off your list. Then move on to a slightly more complex task. And then more complex. Do some, often. You can do it. 2 Manage the tunes in your head Each of us have a favourite tune that plays in our heads. Often the tune is not based on anything in reality but rather our favourite thought pattern or fear at that time. In your situation, the tune is probably something like "I am going to fail". The more you allow the tune to play in your head, the more likely it is that you will fail. Our thoughts can be selffulfilling. So change the tune to "I am going to pass". Play the new tune often and loudly until you start to believe that tune. You will notice as you play the new tune, it will require you to act and this action is what is needed to pass. "I am going to pass" 3 Commit to doing what it takes Make the decision to do what it takes to pass. Find out what that is, ask your friends for help, ask your lecturer, find more examples to practise, adopt new study strategies and habits, do the reading, do the research, actively listen in lectures, ask questions, attend double tutorials, take better notes and review your notes within 24 hours of attending the lecture. Action, action, action... Less talking about the problem and more action, action, action! n is a Career Advisor for Potential At Work. Reach for the Stars L'loyd Cele By Melindi Coetzee L'loyd Cele literally became an overnight sensation after he came second at Idols SA in 2010. Today this talented singer performs with heavyweights such as Proverb and Loyiso Bala. From working with SAMA (South African Music Awards) winning producer Crighton Goodwill on his first album One, to winning a SAMA for the best pop album in 2012, this muso is definitely headed in the right direction. Talented, passionate, respectful, humble and versatile: L'loyd Cele has all the makings of an international superstar. From rags to riches Fame and fortune hasn't come easy for this performer. Before L'loyd entered Idols he tried everything to break into the music industry: singing at restaurants, weddings and other events, writing songs for his church, creating and marketing his home-made music demo's, but all with no prevail. He tells the story of how as a young boy in the township of KwaMashu, he would perform outside the then OK Bazaars to earn money for food. "I sang unashamed and with no fear. I wanted to be like Michael Jackson and admired him greatly," L'loyd says. Then opportunity came knocking in the form of Idols. "I entered Idols with the hope of finally making it big and fulfilling my dreams of being a professional musician. I hated Idols and throughout the show I was useless. Needless to say, I was desperate," he laughs. He hasn't looked back since. "So many amazing opportunities have come my way since Idols and I have grabbed them all with both hands," he says. A bright future Most people think that once you've had your breakthrough and people know your music and your name that it's all downhill from there. Few people realise that being a professional musician is a business and if it's not managed correctly the doors will not stay open for very long. L'loyd advises upcoming stars that you shouldn't expect things to be done for you all the time: "At times you have to make things happen for yourself, for example calling the media when you 6 SACF Vol. 7 No. 2 have an interesting story as opposed to waiting for them to contact you." How does one make it this big, this fast? "The key is consistency. Staying humble, being a people's person and being approachable," he shares. On-going support is also imperative and luckily for L'loyd his wife stands next to him, motivating every step of the way. His future goals are well in-tact: To be a multi-platinum producer, a multi-platinum selling artist and to become an international artist. Then to help raise artists from disadvantaged communities and be a positive role model to his family and to Africa. Lastly, and most importantly, he wants to open the salon his wife has always wanted! Go for gold "Never give up. You have absolutely nothing to lose, but everything to gain; whether it's Idols or something else, if it's your dream, go for it! Too often we are scared to go after our dreams. We allow fear to dominate us. Someone once told me that when you stop dreaming you stop living. If you don't go after what you want, you will never be complete. Never give up on yourself or your dreams. Get out there and make it happen!" n

Technology@work By Jeanne du Plessis 5 fun fitness gadgets It can be challenging to stick to a healthy diet and exercise programme, especially during winter when fatty foods and watching DVDs are much more appealing than salad and the gym! Now that summer is around the corner, many of us want to get back into shape. Luckily there are many great gadgets to motivate you and put some fun into getting fit. 1. Kangoo Jumps: for joggers who don't mind the stares A part from looking a little odd, how cool are the Kangoo Jumps? They'll definitely put some extra bounce in your stride whether you're jogging outdoors or jumping around at home. Wearing these boots, which have spring-loaded soles, is like having mini-trampolines attached to your feet. They reduce the impact on your joints by 80 percent while increasing the amount of effort you need to put into your workout so you'll lose weight, firm up and improve your endurance quicker. They're not only good for your body, but for your mood as well. How can anyone feel down when they're bouncing around like Tigger? They make getting a workout so much fun that exercise won't seem like a chore. 2. For swimmers and water sports enthusiasts: waterproof MP3 players I never exercise without my iPod as upbeat music makes all the difference to my workout. But what about when you're swimming? If you have an iPod or iPhone you can buy a waterproof case for it along with waterproof headphones, or you can buy a waterproof MP3 player designed specifically for underwater listening. There are several options available in different brands which vary in price and specs, so you may want to shop around. If you're doing laps at your local Virgin Active, canoeing across a river or just enjoying a soak in the tub, a waterproof MP3 player will do the trick. 3. For adrenaline junkies: mountable cameras Okay, mountable cameras aren't exactly fitness gadgets and if you're into adventure sports your exercise activities are probably 8 SACF Vol. 7 No. 2 exciting enough, but these are very cool accessories. Attach the camera to your goggles, helmet, wrist, surfboard, windshield or handlebars to capture every adrenaline-charged moment while you're skiing, skateboarding, cycling, cliff-diving, river-rafting, bungee jumping, or whatever it is you love doing. 4. For gamers: consoles and games to get you moving If you prefer consoles to circuit training, you may already have an Xbox with Kinect, Nintendo Wii or PlayStation Move. I know gamers often have a firm favourite when it comes to consoles so I won't recommend one over the other; it depends on your preference and budget. Some people prefer the graphics and game selection for Xbox and enjoy the fact that it's hands-free, while you need a controller for PlayStation and Wii. The Wii is the most budget-friendly option and I personally don't mind playing with a controller, although it didn't work out well for the person I accidentally smacked in the face during a Wii tennis match. There are a huge variety of games to get you moving. Whether you want to dance, play tennis, do obstacle courses or practise your ninja moves, you'll find something fun. 5. Something for everybody: the Fitbit Ultra This is an awesome little device that tracks your activity. It's only about the size of a car key, so once you've clipped it onto your belt, pocket or shirt you'll forget it's there. For the rest of the day it'll track your steps, distance, stair-climbs and calories burned. It even measures how long and how well you've slept. Your stats get uploaded onto your free web account where you get a good overview of your activities. You can add more info here that Fitbit can't track, such as what you've eaten and extra activities such as cycling or swimming. Join the Fitbit online community to share info, compare, compete and chat with thousands of people. n ©Kangoo Jumps ©Contour GPS
