The Wharf in Orange Beach, AL-If there's one thing that I've learned from living here, it's that the majority of people in this town rarely trouble themselves to be in a hurry...unless they're trying to make it to happy hour somewhere. The good news is, there is a place where the drinks are always patiently waiting, and the prices tend to keep all their hours pretty happy. Island Time Daiquiris is one of the newest, not-so hidden treasure chests in Orange Beach. With ridiculous specials every day, this bar has quickly become a huge problem for my daily to-do list (unless you count it being the only item that 12 w October 2012 w Alabama Coast Observer gets checked off). As if I wasn't spending enough time there already, they hired my adorable best friend, Brittany, and now it's nearly impossible to make me leave. Island Time has a top-shelf staff all around. Between Brit, Yvonne, Jeremy, and Sunday's with Bill, I really don't stand a chance against the power of entertaining bartenders and delicious drinks. The owner, Bobby G, the daiquiri daddy, has really created something great. His wall of daiquiri flavors are different than anything else you'll find around here. They offer a 12 oz daiquiri for $6; a 16 oz for $7.50; and a 32 oz for $12.50. They are, of course, equipped with the usual flavors: Frozen Margarita, Strawberry Daiquiri, and an awesome Bushwacker. However, they also throw out some pretty interesting other choices for all the alcohol adventurers that stumble in. They have: Son of a Peach, Yellow Frog, Pirate Punch, and OBAttitude. All of these are tasty options, but the coolest flavor by far is Whiskey Bent (cool as in street cred, not temperature, since they're all the same degree of frozen). Whiskey Bent is essentially a frozen whiskey and coke, and no one else has anything like it. It's like a grown up Coke slushy. They also offer a Virgin Banana Daiquiri for all you kids and designated drivers. If you think it can't get any better, then, you're a glass kind of drinker. I, however, think that if there is less than a full glass, there's just room for another shot. That's when I start perusing Island Time's library of liquor. Yes, there is a full bar. It's more than just a bright room full of frozen daiquiris. All you manly men can still have whatever cocktail or beer you're used to, and it will probably be cheaper than you're expecting. Draught beers include: Bell's Oberon, Yuengling, Shock Top, Andy Gator, Avery IPA, and PBR, and range from $1-$5. On Mondays, domestic bottles are $2, craft and import bottles are $2.50, and well drinks are also $2.50. Tuesdays mean $5, 12 oz daiquiris, $3 wine, $2 domestic bottles, and $2.50 craft and import bottles. Wednesday and Thursday specials are $5, 12 oz daiquiris, and $2.50 well drinks. On Friday and Saturday nights, there is live music on the patio, and it's probably the best live music around the Wharf. It's bound to make you feel just as good as that extra shot in your half-full drink. Fridays are also $3 wine night, which can't hurt at all. Sundays are $3 Bloody Mary's, $2 domestic bottles, and some magical food special that Bill comes up with to please the masses. After all of that, we go home, full and buzzed, and start over again on Monday. It really is a rough life, but it passes much easier on Island Time. Won't ya come join me... Gulf Shores, AL--I get bored pretty easily, so I'm always looking for new places to go, and new ways to spend my time. A friend of mine used to tell me about a place that he and his wife would go for a good steak on a Friday night. He raved about the food, the drinks, and the prices. This place was The American Legion Post 44. The American Legion is a nonprofit organization that is open to members, guests, and the general public. Located at 6781 Highway 59 in Gulf Shores, The American Legion Post 44 has been in our community since 1959. In 2005, it was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan, but they pulled through and reopened in 2007. The American Legion is the world's largest veteran organization, and Post 44 is made up of an amazing group of about 500 members. The American Legion Post 44 does a lot of really cool things. They have nightly specials, and plan fun events on a regular basis. Recently, they have hosted a fish fry for the veterans, and had a big event where "Elvis" visited and performed. All of their proceeds go into funding programs for the veterans. This organization truly is amazing. The nightly specials are wonderful. Sunday nights consist of dinner and dancing. The house band, Musicman and Co., plays from 4-8 p.m., and dinner is served from 4-7 p.m. Monday is Bingo night! It starts at 6 p.m. in the lounge, and, as always, is open to both members and guests. Tuesdays are a really big night for Post 44. They are Prime Rib night. From 5-7 p.m., you get a fantastic prime rib dinner for only $11. Dancing is a Tuesday night must as well, with Musicman and Co. playing from 6-8 p.m. Spaghetti dinner is from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, which I'm hungry just thinking about, and Thursday's mean Bingo starts at 10 a.m.! Friday nights are another big one for Post 44. Once again, it's steak night for $11 (from 5-7 p.m.), but this time, Musicman and Co. play from 7-11 p.m. If you need a day of relaxing after a big meal and a night of dancing, spend your Saturday's at Post 44, watching football! American Legion Post 44 serves lunch 5 days a week, great steak dinners 2 times a week, unlimited dancing, and a full bar every night. You can eat, drink, and get dance-y for the best possible price, and it still benefits a good cause. I don't know where the down side could possibly be found! AMERICAN LEGION HISTORY The March 1919 Paris Caucus set in motion The American Legion. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines. Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans.

Stand and See "...stand and see the salvation of the Lord..." (2 Chronicles 20:17, NASB) So many people today run from anything that's hard. They run from their problems. They run from responsibility. They run from people they don't like. They run from the past. They run from anything that makes them uncomfortable. Instead of facing the issues and dealing with them, they just take the easy way out and go down the path of least resistance. But if you're going to live in victory the way God intends, you have to learn how to face your challenges head on. Notice today's verse doesn't say, "Keep running until you see the salvation of the Lord." It doesn't say, "Bury your head in the sand until God delivers you." No, God wants us to stand strong, set our faces like a flint, and fight the good fight of faith. And the good news is that you don't have to do it in your own strength! He's equipped you with His supernatural power to overcome every obstacle. Make the decision today to stand strong and face the challenges in your life. Be bold and dare to conquer! As you stand in faith, you will see the salvation, the deliverance of Almighty God in every area of your life! Therefore, my beloved brethren, be firm (steadfast), immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord (always being superior, excelling, doing more than enough in the service of the Lord), knowing and being continually aware that your labor in the Lord is not futile (it is never wasted or to no purpose). (1 Corinthians 15:58) A confident person recovers from setbacks. We don't need to see setbacks as failures. A person is not a failure because they tried some Success "Send your grain across the seas, and in time, profits will flow back to you." (Ecclesiastes 11:1, NLT) God has a system that is based on the principle of sowing and reaping. In other words, what you pour out to others will come back to you in increased measure. When you give generously, a generous harvest will return to you. When you help others succeed, you will find abundant success on your path, too. Are you helping others succeed? Are you helping others get ahead? There are some people in your life who hold the keys for you to reach your full potential. These are people that God has placed in your life for you to help along. The higher they rise up, the higher you will rise up, too. When you give generously of your time, talents and resources, you are setting yourself up for greater success. People will come across your path that will help you grow and reach your full potential. Do your part to step out and sow the seed. Be on the lookout for ways you can help others. As you give of yourself to help others grow, you'll see increase in return. You'll see success and live the abundant life He has prepared for you. A PRAYER FOR TODAY Father in heaven, I open my whole heart to You. I invite You to use me to be a blessing in the lives of others. Show me where to invest my time, talents and resources for Your glory. Thank You for the harvest that is coming back to me in Jesus' name. Amen. NEVER STOP TRYING By Joyce Meyer (The Confident Woman Devotinal) things that did not work out. They fail only when they stop trying. Most of the people who are huge successes failed on their way to success. Instead of allowing mistakes to stop you, let them train you. I always say that if I step out and try something and it does not work, at least I know not to do that again. Many people are confused about what they are to do with their lives. They don't know what God's will is for them; they are without direction. I felt that same way once, but I discovered my destiny by trying several things, experienc- Don't Miss the Season of Grace "For the turning away of the simple will slay them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them." (Proverbs 1:32, NKJV) God will never ask you to do something without giving you the ability to do it. You may get passive or complacent and think, "Yes, I know I need to do that. Maybe next week." Well, next week turns into next month. Next month turns into next year. When we put off what God has told us to do, we miss that season of grace. But, if you'll deal with things as soon as God brings them to light, you'll have a special grace, a special empowerment. You'll feel God's enabling power helping you to do it. Today, is there something you're putting off? Something you know in heart that you are supposed to do? Don't let the season of grace pass. Don't let complacency destroy you. Your destiny stands before you. God has something amazing in your future. Be bold, be strong. Step out in faith, be obedient, and embrace the good things God has in store for you! A PRAYER FOR TODAY Father, thank You for the grace to do exactly what You've called me to do. I choose to step out in faith; I choose to follow Your commands. I choose to be faithful because I know that You are faithful. I love You and bless You today and always in Jesus' name. Amen. ing some disappointments - but ita ll worked out well in the end. I quickly found where I fit when I was asked to teach God's Word at church. I thank God that I was confident enough to step out and discover what was right for me. Will you "step out" today? A PRAYER FOR TODAY Lord, I'm excited to be able to step out and try new things, even if they don't work. Help me to discover my role of service for You, the work You have called me to do. Amen!! FAITH is simply believing what God says rather than what you see or feel here in this natural realm. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not see. -Hebrews 11:1 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. -2Corinthians 4:18 16 w October 2012 w Alabama Coast Observer WORRY IS A WASTE By Joyce Meyer (The Confident Woman Devotinal) Therefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater (in quality) than food, and the body (far above and more excellent) than clothing? (Matthew 6:25) Once you allow the spirit of fear to take hold of your life, you open the door to other spirits that want to grip your heart and cause you to freeze up, unable to move forward in confidence and assurance. Worry and dread are both relatives of the spirit of fear. Or look at it this way. Fear is the parent, and worry and dread are the children. The Bible clearly teaches that God's children are not to worry. When we worry, we rotate our minds around and around a problem and come up with no answers. The more we do it, the more anxious we feel. Worry starts with our thoughts, but it affects our moods and even our physical bodies. A person can worry so much that it makes them feel depressed and sad. Worry places stress on your entire system and causes a lot of physical ailments, such as headaches, tension in muscles, and stomach problems. It's no wonder that 80% of chronic worriers also have a poor self-image - their confidence has been eaten up by fear and doubt! Resist worry and fear. They accomplish nothing and are of the enemy. A PRAYER FOR TODAY Lord, You know what I'm worrying about even as I pray. Help me to see through the lie that I am believing and to replace it with truth. Amen!!

For additional information visit http://www.cscgs.com/ . Alabama's Coastline-- Our beaches are very popular. Visitors from near and far enjoy them year-round. And some of those visitors may surprise you. From May through October each year we share our beach with dozens of momma sea turtles. These endangered animals are looking for a safe place to make a nest where their babies can hatch, then find their way safely into the warm Gulf waters. Thousands of hatchlings take their first steps right here on our shores each year. Many of them need a helping hand to reach the water. The many volunteers of the Share the Beach program give them just that. Nesting season begins in May and that's when we begin to see females coming ashore to lay their eggs. They lay an average of 100 eggs per nest. The incubation period is from 55 to 70 days. Alabama's coastline is divided into several areas which are patrolled by Share the Beach volunteers. These volunteers devote their time to searching for new nests, marking the nests and protecting the nests and hatchlings from natural and, more likely, human-related dangers. In 2005, thirty-seven loggerhead nests and one possibly Kemps Ridley were identified along the coast. Throughout the summer, the coast was impacted by four named storms which affected the sea turtle nests by inundating them with water, covering them with large amounts of sand, or washing them away. In the 2006 season, Forty-five loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nests and one Kemps Ridley were identified from Dauphin Island (Mobile County) east to Alabama Point (Baldwin County) near the Florida state line. Only four nests were lost due to Tropical Storm "Share the Beach" Volunteer Program Hundreds of volunteers take time to "Share the Beach" with threatened and endangered sea turtles each year. From searching for nests and assisting in hatchling success to public education, to talks to school groups, these volunteers are making a difference in the future of Alabama's sea turtles and Alabama's coastal ecosystem. Volunteers at a site on Dauphin Island. If you have the time, the turtles need you! Each year hundreds of volunteers take their turn at patrolling an assigned stretch of beach, being available for late-night nest-sitting when hatching time is near, or just helping keep supplies and equipment ready. Alberto and a non-tropical storm in mid-October. Many of the nests were adopted through the Adopt-A-Nest program, which provided the funds needed to purchase a new Polaris ATV. It is estimated that 3,603 hatchling safely made it into the Gulf of Mexico. In the 2007 season, there were fifty-four loggerhead nests and one Kemps Ridley. Share the Beach had an outstanding year along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Many of the nests were adopted through the Adopt-A-Nest program, which provided the funds needed to help Friends of Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge purchase a new supplies for marking and monitoring nests. Through the contributions made by our dedicated volunteers, it is estimated that 3465 hatchling safely made it into the Gulf of Mexico. In the 2008 season, with the help of dedicated volunteers, Share the Beach had an average year along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Seventy-eight loggerhead (Caretta caretta)nests and one Kemps Ridley were identified. Through the contributions made by our dedicated volunteers, it is estimated that 3520 hatchling safely made it into the Gulf of Mexico. From 2003 - 2008 an estimated 17,390 hatchlings safely entered into the Gulf of Mexico. If you are visiting the beach and see signs of a new nest (a large "crawl line" to and from the water), or vandalism to a nest, please call 965-6378 or 1-866-SEA TURTLE to report it. Learn more about our marine friends and how you can recognize their nests, increase their chances of survival, and support the volunteers who Share the Beach with them each year. There are many ways to help the endangered sea turtles, but the best way is to educate yourself about sea turtles and what you can do to help. Tips for Being Sea Turtle Friendly: Avoid using flashlights or flash photography on the beach at night. Turn off outside patio lights and shield indoor lights from shining onto the beach at night. Do not disturb sea turtle nests. Leave sea turtle tracks undisturbed. Do not leave trash on the beach. Volunteer and Adopt-a-Nest. Adopt-a-Nest Adopting a nest is a fun and educational way to show your support. Many parents and grandparents use it as a chance to show our young people the importance of the balance of nature and how they can have a positive impact by becoming involved. All adopting sponsors receive a certificate and important information about their nests, along with a final report on the overall season. If you'd like to learn more about "Share the Beach," the sea turtle nesting season, and what you can do to help, contact us by adopt1@alabamaseaturtles.com or by calling 251-653-NEST.
