www.estesparknews.com COMMUNITY THOUGHT To The Editor: Issues To Consider In 2012 Election Dear Editor, Never in my voting experience have I been faced with such a starkly clear choice. What looms most immediately, of course, is the economy, but there are so many other important issues to consider. Here are some of them. Poverty: The stories of people struggling financially are surprising as they often come from individuals working full-time jobs or enduring hardships caused through no fault of their own. The U.S Census Bureau's new poverty data for the states show millions of families struggling mightily to keep their heads above water. Fourteen states saw statistically significant increases in their child poverty rates. But the morally scandalous bottom line is clear: 16.1 million children are poor in our rich nation with more than seven million living in extreme poverty, too often scared, hungry and homeless. More than one in four children under six were poor in 21 states and the District of Columbia during their years of greatest brain development. In 30 states and the District of Columbia, 10 percent or more of infants, toddlers, and kindergarteners lived in extreme poverty which means an annual family income of less than $11,511 for a family of four. To address poverty effectively requires an understanding of its reality. Which of the candidates seems more likely to meet that requirement? Foreign Relations: The complexity of world affairs is directly related to both our economy and our national security. Uprisings and civil war in the Middle East, war in Afghanistan, recurring violence in Iraq, threats of war between Israel and Iran, the Palestinian question, governments engaged in genocide against their own people, nations on the brink of bankruptcy, trade relations with China and other nations - all these and so many other matters of extreme importance to the United States and to the world at large await the attention of the president and his choice of a Secretary of State. Never before has there been a greater need for a cool head and steady hand. Never before has diplomacy and respect in dealings with and among nations been so crucial. Never before has the delicacy and complexity of international relations required such indepth understanding. Which of the candidates seems more likely to meet these requirements? The Environment: Most people now accept that global warming and its consequences are real. Religious leaders such as Pope Benedict XVI have declared that care of the planet is a moral issue. Yet the thirst for oil and other unsustainable sources of energy renders us incapable of hearing the cries of those who thirst for pure water to drink. Which of the candidates seems more likely to hear those cries? Health: All people of all ages need health care. Which of the candidates seems more likely to see that all receive it? Education: A number of leading economists and researchers agree that investing in children today is the best way to prepare and create a strong America tomorrow. As Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, told participants at the Children's Defense Fund's national conference in July: "Economically speaking, early childhood programs are a good investment with inflation-adjusted annual rates of return on the funds dedicated to these programs estimated to reach 10 percent or higher. Very few alternative investments can promise that kind of return. Notably, a portion of these economic returns accrues to the children themselves and their families, but studies show that the rest of society enjoys the majority of the benefits, reflecting the many contributions that skills and productive workers make to the economy." Which of the candidates puts more emphasis on the importance of education at all levels? Immigration: We are a land of immigrants yet our immigration system is broken. Many live in fear, hiding in the shadows of anonymity. Thousands languish in prisons, some awaiting deportation, others awaiting the chance to prove that they have authentic documentation or sufficient reason to remain here. Many have died and continue to die as they attempt to escape the extreme poverty that leads them into our deserts. To date, no administration has faced the situation squarely. Which of the candidates seems more likely to tackle this controversial issue in a just and humane way? These are but a few of the important issues that our president will face. They are big issues, too big for partisan politics, too big to be overlooked in favor of single issues that blur the larger picture and discourage action for the common good. Would it be too forward of me to suggest that each of us pray as we make our choice known in the voting booth this year? I hope not. Sincerely, Louise Olson Estes Park Friday, October 19, 2012 Throughout US history there have been numerous memorable presidential campaigns. Some of these campaigns can be summed up briefly by their slogans, the most famous being: "Don't swap horses in midstream" (used by Abraham Lincoln and then plagiarized by George W. Bush), "Yes, we can" (Barack Obama), "I like Ike" (Eisenhower), "A chicken in every pot. A car in every garage" (Herbert Hoover), and "It's the economy, stupid" (Bill Clinton). All famous presidents are famous because of one of two things: either they did something incredible for this country, or they made a huge public mistake. The presidential campaign is probably the most important time for a candidate, because it is when he/she convinces the public that he/she can be president. Although I probably won't conceivably ever run for president, there are many do's and don'ts that would help me if I decided to put my name in the hat, as well as platform strategies and ideas that would help me seal the deal. To begin, there are many things you, the candidate, can do to make yourself look like the perfect presidential candidate. Anytime the public can see you, you need to look like Dapper Dan with shiny teeth and a charming smile. If your look seems completely hopeless you can always try plastic surgery and Rogaine. Always be sure to flaunt your family (preferably adorable daughters or dozens of grandchildren and a fat, I mean, fashionable Barbie doll wife. Actually it is even more advantageous to have a highly intelligent, well-educated, articulate wife.) Also, it is crucial to have a good campaign slogan. Tell the people what they want to hear (I will cut taxes! I will balance the budget! I will let them eat cake!) Always assure the people that they are in charge and that you are doing this with their help. Have lots of money to pay for your campaign and have lots of wealthy, corporate friends. Kiss babies wherever you go if there is a camera on you. Most importantly, avoid being a woman. Ironically, there seem to be far more don'ts than do's when it comes to running for president. This is where it starts to get funny. Careless blunders can easily cost a candidate the party's nomination or the people's vote. Complete cluelessness doesn't help either. The biggest mistake is to avoid politics entirely and not give a clear agenda (actually that seems to be working for the current Republican candidate (not to mention any fingers or point any names)). Another basic no-no is manipulating the truth--but then again, what is the truth? (You should not imply that global warming is a hoax, because that is likely to offend millions of scientists.) Never let someone take your picture at an inopportune moment (for example, McCain's zombie pose was an opportunity for the public to witness his true nature.) Don't insult foreign countries, especially when they are hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics. Above all, don't mention Russia to prove your international sophistication ("I can see Russia from my house!"-Sarah Palin). And finally, most importantly, whatever you do, don't mess with God. It will backfire if you take religion out, and it will backfire if you put religion in- it's best to keep your ark out of them waters! Americans Campaigning 101 Page 47 are very particular about which type of candidates they chew on, so don't give them anything gristly. Now, following all of the good advice and counsel I just stated, I will make myself into a presidential candidate. I'll start with my slogans, of which there are many: "Ted for head!"; "we adore Theodore!'; "on ahead with Ted!"; "He'll do it the same, but better!"; "A marshmallow on every stick. An alternative fuel vehicle in every garage." My platform will be to give tax cuts to all and to all a good bonus. I will get the government out of debt by printing more money (why didn't someone else think of that?). I will balance the budget by getting a new accountant. I will fix the plumbing while I am at it. I will put an end to all wars by replacing all weapons with rubber duckies. I will create millions of jobs at rubber duckie plants. The rubber will be biodegradable and will be made from rubber grown in the US on rubber plantations (also creating more jobs). I will embrace American values (a marshmallow on every stick). In terms of health care I will let people take care of their own bodies and not charge them for it. If they get very sick, then I will send them to Canada, saving the US billions of dollars. In terms of education, I will give every student a private robot tutor, and I will make sure they teach them Canadian, eh? I will make all colleges free (think about all the stuff the government can do when you print more $$). I will send a Man, Woman, and Other (perhaps a Canadian, too) to Mars and will set up a colony there. I will also create a new type of car that runs on cow manure and is a hovercraft. I will fund this project by. . . again, printing more money. Under my rule, my, I mean our, country will be living the life it has for so long dreamed of having. And that, my friends, is why you should vote for the most wonderful candidate America has ever seen: me. I am like the best president you can think of and then take that and deep-fat fry it and cover it in powdered sugar and strawberries. Thank you very much. But seriously, running for president can be a solemn undertaking, and if you do not do it right it can lead to unspeakable humiliation and defeat. In order to win over the American people you must insist that America can have its cake and eat it too under your leadership. (Americans really do like cake-almost too much, I think. That explains the flabby condition of some of its residents. By the way, whatever you do as a candidate, do not mention the flabby condition of some of its residents.) When it comes to candidacy there are some tried and true strategies that one should embrace and some acts of idiocy that one should shun, but I have definitely figured out how to win the election when my time comes to be the emperor dictator president of the United States. The best things you can do are have lots of money and friends with money, have a fantastic education, have a striking family, and have the miracle plan to fix everybody's problems. The worst thing you can do is not have enough money or comrades. The presidential race is a tough game, and you need to have some seriously thick skin if you are to play it. Ted Dumont
