Thelma Cook Arnold,
95, of Estes Park died
October 22, 2012 at
Estes Park Medical Center.
She was born October
21, 1917 to Lillian
and Edgar Cook, in
Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Her family preceded
her in death and
two brothers were killed
in World War II. She was
a resident of Colorado
Springs from 1950-1998,
at which time she moved to Estes Park
with her husband William W. Arnold.
Mrs. Arnold graduated from Colorado
State University, and taught home economics
in Segundo, Colorado prior to her
marriage to William Arnold in 1940. She
was married to William until his death in
2000.
Mrs. Arnold is survived by her son
Leonard J. Arnold and daughter-in-law
Judy Arnold of Lyons, Colorado, her
Arnold Klute, 91, of
Westminster, formerly of
Estes Park, CO passed
away October 15, 2012.
He was born on September
24, 1921 on a farm
near Three Oaks, MI to
Benjamin and Hazel
(Wright) Klute. He is survived
by his four children,
Sally Westwater of Marshalltown,
IA, Marjorie
Bowen of Westminster,
CO, Jeffrey Klute of
Rayville, MO, Karen Ghavam of Fort
Collins, CO; a sister, Christine Stover of
Three Oaks, MI; eight grandchildren and
seven great grandchildren. Arnold was
preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen
(Miller) Klute; his brother Bernard
Klute of Niles, Michigan; and two sisters -
Helen Grether of Newport Beach, California
and Anna Jean Klute of Buchanan,
Michigan.
He graduated from high school in New
Troy, MI in 1939 and entered Michigan
State College, East Lansing, MI majoring
in soil science. In 1942 he enlisted in the
U.S. Army Signal Corp; received training
in radio, electronics, and radar repair at
Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago,
IL; and served in the European Theater
until 1945. At Michigan State College he
received a B.S. degree in 1947 and a M.S.
degree in 1948. After obtaining a Ph.D. in
soil physics at Cornell University, Ithaca,
NY in 1941, he was employed as a Research
Engineer at the Schlumberger Well
Surveying Corp., Ridgefield, CT. In 1953
Russ Bissell, a long time resident of Estes
Park died October 9, 2012 in Portland,
Oregon where he had moved recently to
enjoy the company of his son, daughterin-law,
and grandchildren, and the health
benefits of living at sea level. He was born
in St. Louis, Missouri in 1936. Russ spent
most of his early, happy summers in a

as well as grandchildren

Brennen, Declan and
Eva Ericksen.
Thelma was dearly loved
by her family. She deeply
touched the lives of everyone
she knew, and will be greatly missed.
Interment will be held at Estes Park
Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October
26. A celebration of Thelma's life will be
held at Rocky Mountain Evangelical Free
Church in Estes Park at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday,
October 27.

of Soil Physics in the
Agronomy Department at
the University of IL,
Champaign, IL. From 1970
until his retirement in
1987, he held a joint appointment
as Soil Scientist,
Agriculture Research Service,
U.S. Dept. of Agriculture,
and Professor of Soil
Physics in the Agronomy
Department at Colorado
State University, Fort
Collins, CO. His research work in soil
physics has been published in over 40 articles
in scientific magazines. He has an international
reputation for research on water
flow in soil and measurement of soil
fluid properties.
Arnold married Helen Miller in Clio,
Michigan on June 26, 1948. She preceded
him in death on July 9, 2011.
He had many interests including woodworking,
playing the guitar, square dancing,
and hiking in the mountains. With his wife
he hiked across the Grand Canyon when in
his seventies, and hiked to the highest
points of several Western states.
A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. on
November 10, 2012 at YMCA of the Rockies,
Emerald Mountain Lodge, Estes Park,
Colorado. Memorial contributions may
be made to the American Society of
Agronomy in care of Allnutt Funeral Service.

he retired with his wife to live in his
parent's home on Devils Gulch Road. He
is survived by his wife Carol, his son
Daniel and daughter-in-law Kim, and
their two daughters in Portland.

Sue Spooner, Ph.D.
who died on the 18 th of
October, 2012 will be
cremated and her ashes
scattered near her home
in Estes Park, Colorado.
Her sudden and untimely
demise was the
result of an unfortunate
automobile accident. A
memorial service will
be held at a future date
after her husband John
has had a chance for his
injuries to heal.
Dr. Spooner was born Susan Elizabeth
Baker in Indianapolis, Indiana on February
14, 1939. Her Valentine birth date
formed a central feature of her life, as
she gave herself lovingly to many individuals
and causes. She was the daughter
of Hugh J. Baker, Jr, and Dorothy
Cooper Genung Baker.
Married to John A. Spooner in 1962,
she had one son, Jon Kevin Spooner. She
is survived by her husband, John
Spooner, son J. Kevin Spooner, daughter
in-law Belynda K. Spooner and two
grandchildren, Ian Christian Spooner
and Isabeau Celeste Spooner.
Educated at Purdue University (B.S.,
1960, Ph.D., 1975) and University of
Wisconsin-Madison, (M.S., 1961) she
was a counselor, counselor educator, and
Counseling Psychologist. Her career as a
practitioner in College student affairs included
time as a counselor, counseling
Jim Randall died at his
home in Estes Park October
21, 2012. He was
84 years old. James
Arthur Randall was
born September 29,
1928 in Wichita, KS.
His parents were Emil
and Delphine (Fuller)
Randall. He graduated
from Wichita High
School North in 1946
where he was a member
of the National Honor Society, played the
snare drum in the band and earned athletic
letters in baseball, swimming and
football. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and
served from 1946 to 1948, where he was a
flight deck air craft director on the USS
Boxer (CV-21). After his honorable discharge
he spent the summer of 1948 in
the Uncompahgre National Forest as a
trail laborer. He received his B.A. in Forest
Recreation from Colorado A&M
(Colorado State University) in 1952.
While there, he lettered in football and
baseball and was named in the Who's
Who Among Students of Colleges and
Universities. Jim then worked seasonally
at Rocky Mountain National Park in 1950
and 1951, then at Mesa Verde National
Park in 1952. Permanent service in the
National Park system came in November
of 1952 at Carlsbad Caverns as tour
leader and supervisor. He married Ruth
Emily Pyke in Fort Collins, CO on Febru-

center director, placement
counselor, admissions
and high school
relations counselor, and
registrar's office staffer.
Her teaching began at
Colorado College, continued
at Purdue,
thence to the University
of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
(Assistant Professor, Associate
Professor) and
the University of Northern
Colorado (Associate,
and Full Professor) from which she
retired in 2000. In a career which
spanned nearly forty years, she touched
the lives of numerous students and gave
many hours of service to her profession
and its multitude of organizations.
After retiring, Sue became an active
participant in the Estes Park community.
She was an active supporter and "friend"
of Presbyterian Community Church of
the Rockies; Member of the Estes Park
Museum Friends and Library Foundation
Boards; past president of the
Woman's Club; and involved in the leadership
of her homeowner's association.
She served as an Estes Park Visitors Center
Ambassador for many years.
Her wish is to have memorials made in
her memory to the Estes Park Woman's
Club Scholarship Fund in place of flowers.

Jim Randall

Randall family lived at
Carlsbad Caverns National
Park, NM, Chiricahua National
Monument, AZ, Fairfax,
VA, Lassen Volcanic
National Park, CA, Springfield,
VA, Grand Canyon
National Park, AZ, Arches
and Canyonlands National Park, UT,
Rocky Mountain National Park, CO and
Wind Cave National Park, SD. He was
awarded the Department of Interior's
Meritorious Award and was a founding
member of the Association of National
Park Rangers in 1976. Jim and Ruth retired
to their Estes Park home in 1989,
but in 1989 he worked with the National
Park Service's Incident Management
Team on the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez
oil spill in Alaska. In 1994, they started
spending winters in Green Valley, AZ.
His hobbies included sailing, river rafting,
skiing and camping. Ruth died in
August of 2009. Their son, Wayne also
preceded them in death in December of
2004. A son, Robin survives and lives in
Estes Park and Green Valley. No Memorial
service is planned, but a remembrance
will be held in the Spring of 2013
to celebrate Jim's life. See
