A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. ~Washington Irving Having lost my mother to cancer 5 years ago, Mother's Day always brings a sense of emptiness that I always fill with all the Love and Memories she gave to me!! In life our Mother's are our biggest cheerleaders, our best friends, and our words of wisdom!! If you are lucky enough to continue to make memories with your mother, please give her a Big Hug and let her know how much she means to you!! Orange Beach, AL--I had never seen something so beautiful as when I took the Cold Mil Fleet Dolphin Cruise with my dear friend Angelique, her daughter Alex, and my niece Sydney!! I was expecting that we were going to just take a pleasant boat ride, look out over the water, and hope to see the Angels of the Sea make their appearance. I could have never imagined the truly incredible experience that awaited us and that we would be a part of!! Our journey took us to the Wolf Bay area of Orange Beach to the Bear Point Marina. A beautiful marina nestled behind a quaint lil' neighborhood. Now for all you first timers to the area, make sure you look for the signs to Bear Point Marina that will lead you directly into a neighborhood and you will follow the road that will dead end at the Marina. Upon arrival you will be greeted by the friendly Cold Mil staff that will get you all set up. If you come a little early, there is a nice dockside restaurant, Flippers, that you can enjoy getting a bite to eat. Or sit at their outdoor tiki bar, enjoy a few cocktails, and take in the breathtaking views of the marina while being surrounded by some of the most beautiful boats and pleasure crafts you've ever seen. Once we were given the go ahead to board, the crew divided everyone into two groups and each group boarded their own 50-foot Navy transport boat. As we boarded we were pleasantly surprised at how spacious our boat was!! Each boat has areas that are partially shaded, restrooms, and you have unobstructed views in all directions. Cold Mill likes to call it "360 Degrees of Dolphin Viewing!!" And how right they are!! You could see the excitement on everyone's faces, young and old, as they contemplated what was to come. Our cruise began as we pulled out of the dock, cruised through the marina, and out into the open waters of Wolf Bay. The Alabama breeze felt wonderful against our sunkissed skin (spent a lil' too much time at the beach earlier), and the sun cast beautiful rays on the water which made it look like there were stars dancing across the bay!! As we cruised along, everyone aboard was looking all around them in hopes that they would be the first one to scream "I see one.." And get the rest of the spectators excited. But it wasn't until we got a little more out into the bay that the true magic would happen!! As we awaited the first sighting, we noticed that the other transport boat in the fleet was running parallel to us, so being the friendly southerners that we are, we shared friendly gestures of waves and hellos.... And then it happened.... From the wake that was created between the two boats, up from the waves come these magnificent creatures, soaring out of the water as if they had been beside us all the time!! It was such an incredible, magical event to see!! It was as if we were creating the perfect playground for them with the wake from the boats and they continued to leap out of the water and follow us for as long as we could keep the waves going!! Sometimes it was only one dolphin, other times there were two or more, and one of the most precious, in my opinion, is when a mother and her child rode the wave together!! Almost as if she were teaching it the basics of wave surfing!! Truly a magical moment if ever I've seen one!! Our cruise continued for an hour and half, during that time we experienced numerous sightings as we realigned the boats and kept recreating the perfect playground in which to boost our chances to encourage these beautiful creatures of the sea to come out and play with us!! As the sun began to set, and oh what a beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast sunset it was, we began to head back to the marina. There was not a person on our boat, adult or child, that did not feel like they had just witnessed something truly magical!! I don't think a one of us ever anticipated when we set out on this adventure that we would be witness to and touched by such an incredible viewing of these beautiful and playful creatures that have always held our hearts as the Angels of the Sea!! Whether you are living on or visiting the Alabama Gulf Coast, you owe it to yourself to experience this Cold Mil Fleet Dolphin Cruise. I can tell you first hand that you will not be disappointed!! Other Cruises & Fishing Available... Beach Cruises & Fishing Trips-6 passenger maximum- Cruise along the beach with Captain Tom in the morning as he advertises in front of the condos! Bring along your beach towel, cooler of drinks, and snacks. Add fishing to the trip if you like for an additional charge. Call 251-943-3510 for more details and reservations. COBIA FISHING TRIPS-Come aboard our 50′ 3rd COLD MIL and enjoy the excitement of catching the migratory COBIA. Searching for the Cobia is enjoyed late March-early May and takes place within a few hundred yards of the beaches. Sizes of the Cobia range from 33″-5 1/2′ long weighing up to 100 pounds! Fishing trip last 4-6 hours and for 6 passengers includes lunch, drinks, fish cleaning, and Dinner at Flippers Seafood & Oysterbar. Chef will even cook your fresh catch and serve it family style. Gulf Shores, AL-- Welcome to Joey's Northshore Grill, the inland Hula Hula Tiki Bar serving up surfer dude attitude, good eats and good beats! Upon our first visit to joey's we fell in love with the hippy flair that spices up the tiki atmosphere. When you enter Joey's you can choose from the family-friendly diner with neon pickled wood trimmings and flower-power posters or the outdoor tiki bar for dining and live music, or, go straight into the main bar decorated with surf boards and tiki lanterns hosting great musicians and son writers from all around the world, each option serving-up some radical eats served by Chef Jeff Hinson. Owner, Joey Ward, carries his tall, tanned self about with a laid back attitude, but, when it comes to business, he is a hard working man with the knowledge and inspiration to make his Grill a huge success. Having acquired the talents of Chef Jeff, the two have come-up with a tantalizing menu sure to please the palates of all individuals. Along with a crazily enticing menu, the chef is always creating black board specials so ingeniously, that some become more than a special, they become a part of the menu! I am a strong enforcer of ordering chef specials, these are the dishes they flourish in creating, and Jeff certainly does!! Our waiter, Paul Baker, a real veteran of the service industry, was exquisitely informative and helpful in recommendations for our excursion. A real professional, Paul was spot-on in serving Bobbie and I the largest glasses of Pinot Grigio I've ever seen! While Cheli and her brother Sonny, our newest addition to the staff at ACO, ordered iced tea, our adventure began with entertaining and humourous conversations with several of the staff members! Upbeat and happy, you know you're in for a good time when the staff loves their jobs! We began with Stuffed House Made Jalapenos - bacon wrapped and crab stuffed served in a Fontina Mornay sauce and drizzled with a sweet island sauce! The pepper heat is like playing Russian Roulette, till someone gets the hotter-than-hot pepper, but the flavor was incredi- ble! I took the pepper out of the hottest ones and devoured the wonderful stuffing and bacon! Jeff graciously brought over Orange Citrus Sorbet to chill out our palates and we all loved this amazing all natural fruit and ice appertif!! The Wiki Wiki Volcano Stack - a delectable blend of fried baby shrimp rolled in wiki wiki fire sauce atop a cornmeal dusted fried green tomato and topped again with cherry tomato, was such a complimentary blend of the ingredients, we were all in love with this! Chef Jeff makes over 30 sauces for his creations and I was crazy for all of them that I experienced! The choices of Tasty Teasers also include Chef's Waygu Sliders, Shrimp, Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Hummus, Nacho Grande, and Super Duper Quesadillas, or Chef's Appetizer Trio. On this day we devoured the smokiest chargrilled oysters swimming in spiced butter and parmesan cheese, Jumbo Gulf Shrimp stuffed with crabmeat dressing and bacon wrapped and Blackened Flounder, delicate and lightly spiced, this trio was phenomenal!! The girls all enjoyed a large fresh garden salad, Cheli and I enjoying creamy bleu cheese dressing while Bobbie chose the house specialty, a strawberry-nut vinaigrette that was really incredible with the salad. Sonny ordered From Our Grill, Surf and Turf - 10oz Fork Tender Filet nicely seasoned served with jumbo grilled shrimp, twice baked potato and veggie, steamed squashes and snowpeas that I'm still savoring! Bobbie had a huge plate of seared Ahi Tuna, served medium rare with a delicious Thai noodle and sweet chile side and wasabi mayo. Cheli ordered off the black board, a Flintstone sized bone-in Pork Chop with serrano chile glaze, a baked sweet potato, asparagus, and two more stuffed jalapenos, cooked to perfection and picture perfect! I opted for the monster sized Down Under Platter - From the Sea - a collection of the sea's finest-sauteed blue crab claws, more chargrilled oysters (yeah!), garlic shrimp, a large blackened flounder filet because they were out of lobster, with caribbean rice and the same wonderful veggies! I've been eating off of this enormous array of delicacies for days! There are many fabulous choices from the Grill and Tiki Torch menus, but, the burgers, sandwiches, and wraps are very big menu items as well!! You can choose from the World's Best Burgers which include the Big Kahuna, Island Burger, The Dank-"Da Bomb of All Burgers," and Capt. Lori Style - double meat, double chili, double onion, and double cheese! But if you're not in the mood for a burger then you can choose from their Sandwich Board, Yard Bird, and Wrap-N- Roll sections that are sure to have something to tempt your palate!! We tried Da Cajun - blackened shrimp, Andouille sausage, tomato, onion, pepper jack cheese & salsa in a jalapeno wrap with a side of gouda mac. Gouda Mac - you ain't had mac-n-cheese till you had you some Gouda Mac!! A meal in itself, the wrap was unbelievable, and I swear they stole the gouda mac-n-cheese from my very own kitchen! LOL! Means I Love It! We also tried the Best Club Sandwich - piled high with shaved turkey, roast beef, cheddar, bacon, lettuce and tomato on two slices of buttered and grilled sourdough bread with sweet potato fries. A melt-in-your-mouth pile of goodness, I could really dig a Joey's Club Now!! Da Sweet Stuff is another intoxicating list of exorbitant goodies, I would again suggest the Chef's Tri- Sweets to cover more bases and add a delicious after dinner coffee to test your senses! What's Up??!! Surf's up dudes, head to Joey's Northshore Grill and adjust your attitudes!! Enjoy!! Until Next Month... ^xÄÄç
