Dvar Chizuk Parshas Vayeira November 18, 2016 Parshas Vayeira In Parshas Vayeira, we read about Akeidas Yitzchak. If Avrohom Avinu was commanded directly by Hashem to bring his son as a Korban, what was the big “test” that Avrohom Avinu had to pass? Would not any person who Hashem commanded to do something, even if it would be hard, gladly follow the gezairah of HaKadosh Baruch Hu? What exactly was the nisayon? In the classic work Drashos HaRan, in the 6th drasha, the Ran explains as follows: Hashem never commanded Avrohom to bring Yitzchok as a korban. He merely requested Avrohom to do so. The Posuk says: “Kach na es bincha… “Please take your son…” Hashem was hinting and asking Avrohom to do this act of true Mesirus Nefesh. This was the test! Would Avrohom Avinu be able to follow the will of Hashem even though he was not explicitly commanded to do so? As we know, of course, Avrohom Avinu passed this nisayon with a grade of A+! We see how important it is not only to keep the letter of the law but also to keep the “spirit” of the law. We are often challenged with things that may perhaps comply with the Halacha but at the same time do not fit into the intent of the Halacha. This is certainly one of the concepts behind the idea of doing something Lefnim Meshuras Hadin, above the letter of the law. Look how much nachas the Ribono Shel Olam had from this one action of Avraham. In fact until this day we draw upon the merit of Avraham Avinu’s deed! People are always looking for zechuos, merits, for all types of issues; parnassa, gezunt, nachas, and shidduchim, just to mention a few. Perhaps if we try to do something “above the letter of law”, just because it is the right thing to do, this would be a fabulous merit for us, our families and our entire community! Have a wonderful Shabbos, Rabbi Yaakov Schwartz Middle School Menahel Parshas Vayeira November 18, 2016 1

Lower School News pre 1a programs snapshots @ ta בס”ד The boys in the Al Pi Darko Pre 1a have been building their Hebrew vocabulary using special cards and our movable Aleph Bais. They have been “writing” words from the new cards and learning their meaning from the photo on the back. This also helps them practice kriah as they reinforce words with the komatz. Way to go Dovid Engel and Akiva Millrod who were the first ones to use this new work. Chaim Szendro, in 5th grade knows that reviewing what you learned in previous years is important. He made his rebbe from last year, Rabbi Moskowitz, very proud when he constructed a realistic bridge and boat out of masking tape. Impressive! mazel tov The boys in Morah Maggie’s and Morah Faigy’s Pre1a class earned a popcorn party by filling their popcorn jar to the rim! The boys collectively earn a scoop of popcorn kernels every time the class is at their B.E.S.T. The boys have exhibited tremendous cooperation and good middos, keep up the great work! Rabbi & Mrs. Nachman and Ottie Kahana on the birth of a granddaughter Morah Tearza and Morah Nechama Bayla are so proud of their nursery class for getting their 1st “Best in Line” trophy. They really know how to be a team! Please send in your “TA Moments” for the TA-100 tribute book to Rabbi Yechiel Spero at chiely1@gmail.com י”ז חשון תשע”ז 2 פרשת וירא

Lower School News spectacular science Do you remember your Safety Kid ABCs? בס”ד Mrs. Pepper’s and Mrs. Sommer’s 5th grade science classes have gotten off to a busy start this year. They have learned all about matter, states of matter, properties of matter, as well as chemical changes and physical changes. They have made models of atoms demonstrating their understanding of the parts of an atom as well as the different charges each part has. We have recently learned about what static electricity is and produced it in the classroom to demonstrate what happens when there is a build-up of electrons. Pieces of paper jumped onto a comb, and onto a balloon that had been rubbed. What a shock! Our next task will be learning all about series and parallel circuits. Of course, we will be making our own.
