Health care cash going to care home
RM will have to come up with $500,000, reeve says
By Marc Zienkiewicz
A $94,000 reserve fund kept by the RM
of Lac du Bonnet will go toward a new care
home for the community, council decided
July 27.
After tabling the matter twice over the past
several weeks, Reeve Rick Lussier and several
council members said the money would
be best used as part of an estimated $500,000
the RM will have to raise if the province is to
bring a new personal care home to the community.
A meeting took place last week between
the North Eastman Health Association
(NEHA) and municipal officials, who were
informed that if a new care home is approved
for Lac du Bonnet, the community itself will
be responsible for 10 per cent of the $25-$30
million total project cost.
That means the community will have to
come up with around $3 million in public
donations, NEHA Chief Executive Offi cer Jim
Hayes told the Leader last week.
"As we ...

Septic plan misunderstood: camp director
By Marc Zienkiewicz
A proposed septic field system for Camp
Cedarwood does not present an environmental
hazard as the public seems to believe,
according to camp director Brad Plett.
Plett appeared at RM of Lac du Bonnet
council's regular meeting July 27 to answer
questions about the controversial plan,
which is being designed by engineering fi rm
enivar and has been in the works for more
han three years.
"The more information we can get out
here, the better," Plett told the Leader in a
ollow-up meeting at the camp on Wednesay.
A fl ood of letters from those in opposition
o the plan has been received by the provnce,
as part of the public hearing process
hat will be carried out before the project
eceives approval.
Concerns over the plan largely centre
round fears that effl uent could make its way
rom the septic fi eld system into the nearby
inawa Bay, which has suffered from algae
looms in recent ye ...

Big hail pelts region
By Marc Zienkiewicz
A tornado watch issued by Environment
Canada on Monday was followed
by sunny skies and extreme
humidity.
At 10:14 p.m. Monday, Environment
Canada downgraded a tornado
watch for the region to a severe
thunderstorm watch. A tornado did
touch down around 9 p.m. just north
of Oakbank but isn't believed to have
caused much property damage or any
injuries.
Th e rain began falling just after Lac
du Bonnet's slopitch league had fi nished
playing a game, and the downpour
came with marble-sized pellets
of hail.
The rain was the last thing the
region's farmers need. Fields were
once again soaking wet with drainage
ditches flowing fast with the incoming
fl ow of rain.
At press time, Environment Canada
was calling for sunny skies Friday and
Saturday, rain for Sunday and more
sun for Monday's civic holiday.
The temperature should reach a
sizzling 28 C, but the nights will be
cool with temperatures of as low as
13 C.
The normal high for this time of
year is 2 ...

O'Leary in
the running
By Marc Zienkiewicz
Michael O'Leary is going up against two
other candidates for the RM of Alexander's
reeve's chair.
The 57-year-old resident of Sunset Bay
works for Manitoba Hydro at Great Falls, and
is looking forward to the upcoming Oct. 27
municipal election.
"I've lived here since 1986 and I've come
to know the people quite well," he says. "A
lot of the changes I'd like to see are just basic
ideas."
O'Leary would like to see what he calls
more "equal" treatment among RM ratepayers.
Right now, he says there's one rule for
some and a diff erent rule for others when it
comes to how bylaws are enforced.
"It's the old issue that the rule of law
should apply to everyone equally," he says.
He also slammed the RM for its water
plant project, which was recently quashed
after 10 years of planning. If the plan would
have gone ahead, ratepayers would have
been forced to shell out thousands of dollars
regardless of whether they wanted the water
or not.
"It was way too e ...

Region enjoys medieval festival
By Marc Zienkiewicz
The 2010 Cook's Creek
Medieval Festival pulled
in spectators from around
the North Eastman region
last weekend for a funfi
lled day of jousting, feasting,
armoured combat, aledrinking
and much more.
Taking place July 24 at
Immaculate Conception
Church in Cook's Creek,
the day proved an exciting
one for the hundreds of
people who came through.
It was the fourth year for
the biannual event, held
as a fundraiser for the
church.
Returning once again
were a group of professional
jousters from Calgary,
this year featuring
Will Barton and fi ancée Liz
Warry, both hailing from
Lancashire, England.
Barton took up jousting
less than a year ago, and
it's become a favourite pastime
for him.
"It's a lot of fun to work
with horses and put on a
show," he said.
Warry said she first saw
him get on a horse eight
months ago, and it's a bit
surreal to think they're
now travelling the country
as jousters.
