Young boxer to defend title in Kansas City at 2010 Ringside World Championships
Gross looking ahead to Olympics
By Thomas Shirtliffe
Jessica Gross will be taking on the big girls
when she heads to Kansas City next week for
the 2010 Ringside World Championships.
Gross, a two time national champion, is
the defending world champion at Ringside
but will be in a tougher group this year as she
will be facing more experienced boxers this
time around. Gross will be in the 17-34 open
division this year.
"Future Olympians are going to be there,"
says coach Kirk Fleming, owner of Eastman
Boxing Club where Gross and other boxers
train for this upcoming world championship.
Last year, Gross was fighting in the
15-16-year-old division and was unbeaten on
her way to the championship. She even won
the Best Boxer Award, awarded to the best
boxer in their respective division. Gross says
she was nervous going into last year's fi ghts,
but how is she feeling ab ...

Oakbank couple makes huge success of Wonder Shows
Kiernickis love the lifestyle, excitement of midway
By Jim Mosher
Oakbank's Ken and Anita Kiernicki spend
summers giving people a thrill. And they're
thrilled to do it.
The couple own Wonder Shows, a travelling
midway that dazzles and delights tens of
thousands of people each year. Whether it's
the Morden Corn and Apple Festival, Peguis
Treaty Days, the Icelandic Festival or, as it
was last weekend, Winnipeg Beach Boardwalk
Days, the Kiernickis transport their
about 20 rides to venues across the province.
Ken says he began working as a carnie
when he was 12 years old. Now 46, Ken has
ogged hundreds of thousands of miles delivring
constantly improving rides to people of
ll ages.
He would rise through the ranks to become
anager of Winnipeg's popular Tinker Town.
e spent seven years overseeing that operaion.
He then spent nine years with another

Kids hit the high seas at church
By Thomas Shirtliffe
Sometimes just reading the Bible isn't
fun enough for kids. Th ey want to have fun,
play games and watch videos. Local pastor,
Chris Jordan, knew that and he put them
all together to help kids learn about God
and the Bible in a fun and interactive way.
With the theme this year called 'High
Seas Expedition,' Jordan had a large ship
displayed on the stage in his church and
had wheels and anchors on display on
the walls. Sixty kids got to hit the decks
throughout the week, playing games, having
snacks and watching video. All of this
was done with God's words in mind.
"We're trying to teach them about God,"
Jordan says. "Th is way makes it fun for the
kids."
Each day brought a new subject for the
kids. Monday was 'God's word is true',
Tuesday was 'God's word is comforting',
Wednesday was 'God's word is surprising",
Th ursday was 'God's word is life changing',
and Friday was 'God's word is fo ...

Gift cards bring smiles
By Thomas Shirtliffe
Ever wanted $5000 to spend on whatever you
wanted? Well, three residents from the Beausejour area
will get to do just that.
Leone Rondeau, Joyce Semchuk and Paul Gauthier
were randomly selected from a draw at the RBC branch
n Beausejour that won them each a $5,000 VISA gift
ard. The draw stems from a contest held during the
lympic games torch relay this past winter. People
were invited to the branch for a financial review and
then had their names put into the contest.
The winners were glad to have won and were also
glad to receive the chance to win as well.
"Th at was a great oppurtunnity and thank you," says
Joyce Semchuk to RBC.
Paul Gauthier was not able to make it to the event
but he told the RBC branch that he was very excited to
have won.
