Historic deal close to being finalized
Agreement would see local aboriginals achieve equal partnership
BY JOHNNIE BACHUSKY
Red Deer Express
A tentative historic agreement
has been reached between Red
Deer City council and the local
native community that will establish
an unprecedented partnership
to improve the lives of the City?s
4,500 aboriginal citizens.
Last week, a group of local aboriginal
leaders met privately with
members of City council and senior
municipal staff to propose a formal
agreement that would establish
the partnership, which both
sides are heralding as groundbreaking.
The meeting ended with
a tentative agreement, and a commitment
on both sides to co-create
a draft document for City council
to debate publicly later this month.
?IT WOULD BE AN AGREEMENT
SAYING THEY (CITY) WOULD
ACKNOWLEDGE AND TAKE THE
ADVICE OF WHATEVER THE

In the spirit of Valentine?s

will sing two love songs, present
a beautiful rose, a card and

It?s become something of a

Women's hockey in Red Deer a century-old tradition
The 2010 Vancouver Winter
Olympics will soon be
upon us. After gold medals
at the 2002 Salt Lake City
and 2006 Turin Winter
Olympics, as well as an
Olympic silver medal at the
1998 Nagano games and several
World championships,
Canada is expected to be a
very strong contender for
the gold in women?s hockey.
Women?s hockey has
exploded in popularity in
the last couple of decades.
However, what is often forgotten
is that women?s hockey
was also a major sport in
Canada in the early part of
the last century.
The first recorded
women?s hockey to take
place in Alberta was played
in Medicine Hat in 1897. A
few years later, in the winter
of 1904-1905, the first
women?s hockey was organized

Central Alberta United Way announces final fundraising campaign results
BY MARK WEBER
Red Deer Express
This year?s final
fundraising tally for the
United Way of Central
Alberta is $265,000 short of
its goal but officials are still
putting on a happy face.
?We knew that 2009 was
going to be a unique and
challenging year, but given
the mood of the community,
the province and country
12 months ago, it is hard
to see our campaign as anything
but a success,? says
Darcy Mykytyshyn, 2009
campaign chair during the
organization?s wrap up
media conference Thursday
at The Hub in downtown
Red Deer.
?The tremendous loyalty
of long-time supporters and
new donors made it possible
for us to hit this
achievement,? he said.
?So, too, did the inspiration
and amazing efforts of
our volunteers who created
dynamic new programs and
elevated the awareness
around the need.

OUR OPINION
Change pay system
for elected officials
To have City councillor expenses
made public four times a year -
instead of one ? is of course a move
that is hard in any way to criticize.
It increases transparency and
makes the City?s elected officials
more accountable to the public. Few
could muster any credible argument
against this.
However, what the new initiative
also shows is that it?s time to end all
claims and notions that being an
elected civic official in Red Deer is a
part-time job.
It is full-time in every way, including
pay. However, for a long time it
was easy to understand claims that
sitting on council was a part-time job,
if one chose to look only at the base
salary.
The expense and per diem figures
officially released by the City on Jan.
25 proves there is nothing part-time
about serving as an elected official. It
also shows that a new system of paying
Red Deer?s City councillors is way
overdue.
The mayor?s annual sal ...

Red Deer Express 9
I would like to take this opportunity
to chime in on the recent
string of letters in the Red Deer
Express pertaining to atheism
and religion.
Having been a somewhat religious
fellow for most of my life I
was intrigued with Mr. Klause?s
piece on atheism (Jan. 20) as I
had no previous understanding
of it.
I knew people didn?t believe in
God but I myself didn?t understand
why. I read Mr. Klause?s
article with an open mind and
tried to see his point. I felt that
his piece was well
constructed and had a few valid
points. Although I didn?t agree
with all of them, I was shocked
to read the next week (Jan. 27) as
